Democrats haven't applauded a Republican senator this enthusiastically since John McCain put Obamacare on life support.
Thom Tillis showed up to a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday with ten minutes of prepared remarks – and zero intention of asking a single question.
What happened next made every Democrat in that room forget, for just a moment, that they're supposed to hate Republicans.
Tillis Called Noem's DHS Leadership a Disaster and Demanded Her Resignation
Tillis opened by telling Noem he wasn't there to ask questions.
"I'm giving you a performance evaluation here," he said. "I'm not looking for a response."
Then he went to work – hitting every talking point the left has thrown at the Trump Administration's immigration enforcement. He called DHS under Noem "a disaster." He accused Stephen Miller of "aiding and abetting" the arrests of American citizens.
He said the Trump Administration was focused on the wrong people – chasing deportation numbers instead of going after the worst criminals Biden let in.
Tillis attacked the January 6 pardons, called Trump's 1,500 pardoned patriots "thugs," and complained that Capitol Police still hadn't been properly thanked for their work that day.
He tore into FEMA, accused Noem of violating federal law by restricting disaster funding, and put up a side-by-side chart comparing her response to Biden-era FEMA. He was using Biden as the good example.
Then he called for Noem's resignation.
The room erupted. Democrats clapped. Tillis looked up and said: "I don't want an applause, please don't do that for me."
He got exactly what he came for.
The Retiring Republican Senator Who Handed Democrats Their Midterm Ammunition
Tillis is not seeking reelection.
Trump threatened to primary him last summer after Tillis voted against the One Big Beautiful Bill over Medicaid cuts. Tillis announced his retirement and has spent every day since getting more aggressive – holding Trump nominees, attacking DHS operations, and now delivering a ten-minute speech that Chuck Schumer could have written himself.
The North Carolina Republican Party censured him in 2023 – by an overwhelming two-thirds vote – over his positions on immigration and gay marriage. His approval rating sits at 25 percent.
Freed from any electoral consequence, he's making it official.
Tillis threatened to put a hold on all en bloc nominations until Noem answers his questions about a North Carolina immigration operation called Charlotte's Web. He said he'd deny quorum in Senate committees if she doesn't respond within two weeks.
He called it accountability. Democrats called it brave. The people in Charlotte whose neighborhoods ICE is finally cleaning up are calling it something else.
What Tillis Just Handed the Left
Democrats have spent weeks trying to make Kristi Noem the face of everything wrong with Trump's immigration agenda – the Minneapolis shootings, the FEMA funding, the deportation numbers.
They've introduced impeachment articles. They've called for investigations. None of it stuck, because this is a Republican majority and it doesn't stick without Republicans joining the pile.
Tillis just joined the pile. On camera. With ten minutes of prepared remarks that ran through every Democrat talking point in sequence – from Stephen Miller to officer-involved shootings to the dog she killed in her book.
A sitting Republican senator gave Democrats a clip they will run in every competitive Senate race this fall. He gave them the cover they needed to attack the Trump Administration's signature policy and call it bipartisan.
He did it while DHS has been in partial shutdown since February 14th – because those same Democrats are holding it hostage over the Minneapolis shootings.
Tillis sided with the people running that hostage operation. They thanked him with applause.
You voted to stop exactly this. You sent Republicans to Washington to hold the line – not hand Democrats the ammunition to tear it down. Tillis just reminded you why that fight is never finished.
