Maryland Democrats have spent years insisting their elections are secure, accurate, and beyond question.
This week Republican primary voters opened their mail-in ballots and found a Democrat one inside.
And the ballot mix-up is the least alarming thing that happened.
How Maryland Democrats Sent 400000 Wrong Mail-In Ballots and Walked Away Clean
Maryland hired a vendor to mail out primary ballots for the June 23 primary election.
That vendor sent 400,000 voters the wrong party's ballot.
Not a few hundred. Not a clerical glitch affecting one county.
Four hundred thousand.
This is what mass mail-in voting looks like in practice – not the fraud-proof convenience system Democrats promised, but 400,000 pieces of paper flying through the postal system with no one accountable for what happens next.
The state's response was to mail replacement ballots to everyone – and ask voters to destroy the first one themselves.
No verification. No confirmation. Just trust the mail and hope nobody notices.
Trump responded immediately, posting on social media that Maryland had "500,000 Fake Mail-In Ballots revealed" and calling for the SAVE America Act.
State Elections Administrator Jared DeMarinis fired back at the President directly.
"I want to assure the President, voters, and the public that NO fake mail-in ballots were distributed," DeMarinis wrote.
He then accused Trump of creating "confusion and distrust around the election process."
The man whose agency just mailed 400,000 wrong ballots told the sitting President he was the one undermining confidence in elections.
The DOJ Was Already Suing Maryland Over Its Voter Rolls Before This Happened
The DOJ didn't come after Maryland because of the ballot disaster.
They were already there.
In January, the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division sued Maryland – along with five other blue states – for refusing to hand over their statewide voter registration rolls.
Former Attorney General Pam Bondi called it a pattern of deliberate obstruction.
"Accurate voter rolls are the cornerstone of fair and free elections, and too many states have fallen into a pattern of noncompliance," Bondi said.
Harmeet Dhillon, the U.S. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, made the stakes explicit.
"States that continue to defy federal voting laws interfere with our mission of ensuring that Americans have accurate voter lists," Dhillon said.
"At this Department of Justice, we will not stand for this open defiance of federal civil rights laws."
The Republican National Committee had already filed its own separate lawsuit against Maryland in December – before the DOJ suit and before any wrong ballot went out.
Their complaint alleged that at least two of Maryland's most populous counties show more registered voters than adult citizens over 18.
Other counties report registration rates above 95%.
The Census puts Maryland's statewide rate at roughly 75.6%.
Those numbers do not reconcile.
Republicans Are Demanding a Federal Voter Roll Audit and Maryland Is Saying No
The DOJ is already suing Maryland. The RNC filed its own separate lawsuit in December. And now the Maryland Freedom Caucus is demanding DeMarinis immediately release the voter rolls to the federal government for a full audit – and explain in writing exactly how the state plans to tell the first round of wrong ballots apart from the replacements.
"With 400,000 double ballots in circulation, we need to be absolutely sure that there is one vote, one person," their statement read.
RNC Chair Joe Gruters framed it plainly.
"The State Board of Elections has failed to do its job and remove ineligible or deceased voters from its rolls," Gruters said.
"Marylanders have a right to accurate voter rolls."
The Maryland Freedom Caucus named the people responsible directly.
"The Maryland Democrats and the bureaucrats over at the Board of Elections have proven once again that they are the biggest purveyors of voter suppression tactics in the state of Maryland," their statement read.
Their argument is simple: if your wrong ballot gets mailed back before the replacement arrives, your vote disappears – not because of fraud, but because of Democrat-run incompetence.
Maryland Has a 98 Percent Voter Registration Rate and Wont Explain It
Maryland is not an accident.
It is a blue state with a 98% voter registration rate – against a national average of 69% – a history of stonewalling federal transparency requests, and an elections administrator who responds to legitimate questions by attacking the President.
Republican gubernatorial candidate John Myrick called it straight: "This is a nightmare. This is the absolute worst-case scenario."
Trump's SAVE America Act – which would require proof of citizenship to register and photo ID to vote – just failed a Senate amendment vote 48-50.
Four Republicans joined every Democrat to kill it.
Maryland just proved exactly why it needed to pass.
And none of it matters because Democrats have run Maryland for decades and nothing here changes without them allowing it to change.
DeMarinis still has his job.
The voter rolls are still locked – and Maryland is still fighting every request to open them.
The same party that created this mess will oversee the investigation into the mess they created.
Democrats always choose to fight the audit.
And every single time they do, you already know what they're hiding.
