James Garner watched Hollywood chew up good men his entire career.
When Tom Selleck came to him with a contract he hated and no way out, Garner didn't offer sympathy.
He said the one thing that changed everything – and Selleck has never forgotten it.
Tom Selleck Hated the Original Magnum PI Script and Almost Walked Away
Tom Selleck sat down with Ted Danson on Danson's podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name, and laid it all out.
The original Magnum pilot was written by Glen Larson – the same man behind Battlestar Galactica and The Fall Guy.
Thomas Magnum, as written, had no flaws, two beautiful women on his arm, and a Ferrari.
"I hated it," Selleck told Danson. "It was terrible."
The problem ran deeper than a bad script.
Selleck was under contract – CBS and Universal claimed his existing studio deal still applied, meaning he had no choice but to take the role.
He had done six pilots by that point, and none had made it to air.
The studio knew it. He knew it.
"Who the hell do you think you are?" they told him. "You've never even been on the air."
James Garner and the Rockford Files Advice That Saved Tom Selleck
Garner was driving Selleck back from The Rockford Files set one afternoon when Selleck finally admitted what was bothering him.
He told Garner the whole story – the contract, the script he despised, and the studio that said he had no way out.
Garner listened. Then he said it.
"You don't have much power, but if they want you, you'll never have more power than you do right now."
That was all he said.
Selleck went back to the studio and said no.
"Jim Garner, in a way, just kind of saved my life," Selleck told Danson. "I would've been long gone from that version of Magnum."
He knew the risk he was taking.
In a 1997 interview with Charlie Rose, Selleck admitted he'd "bet the farm" by pushing back so hard.
"Had it not worked out, I think I would have gotten a pretty good reputation for being difficult and never worked again."
His father's voice steadied him, too.
"Risk is the price you pay for opportunity."
How Donald Bellisario Rewrote Magnum PI in Two Weeks
Selleck's lawyer worked out a compromise: three writers would come in and make their case, and Selleck would pick the one he wanted.
For the first time in his career, the writers were auditioning for him – not the other way around.
He had just completed The Sacketts, a Western miniseries that proved he could carry a long-form production.
The studios knew he could handle a series now.
One of the three writers was Donald P. Bellisario – the man who would go on to create NCIS.
They had lunch.
"He says, 'What do you want to do?'" Selleck recalled. "I said, 'I want to do something like Rockford. I want a character with flaws and some heart.'"
Bellisario's response: "Say no more."
Two weeks later, Bellisario came back with what Selleck called the best TV script he had ever read.
Magnum – the real one – was born.

The show ran from 1980 to 1988 – eight full seasons on CBS.
Selleck earned five consecutive Emmy nominations for Lead Actor in a Drama Series and won once.
When it was over, the Smithsonian Institution called – not to retire a piece of pop culture, but to preserve it.
The version without Bellisario's rewrite – the James Bond knockoff with no soul – never would have gotten that call.
Hollywood told Tom Selleck he was nobody with no right to say no.
He said no anyway.
The studio caved, Bellisario rewrote it, and forty years later the Smithsonian called.
Selleck, now 81, has signed with United Talent Agency and is developing a new Jesse Stone project and a true crime series for The History Channel.
The men who bent to get their shot are mostly forgotten.
The man who refused is still working.
