Bill Maher has voted Democrat in every presidential election of his adult life.
Then he went on national television and torched his own party.
Maher said something about 2028 that should keep every Democrat up at night.
Maher Blasts DSA Socialists Taking Over the Democrat Party
The HBO host sat down with ABC's Jonathan Karl on This Week and didn't hold back.
Three New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani-backed far-left candidates swept Democrat congressional primaries last month – knocking out two veteran incumbents in deep-blue districts all but guaranteed to go Democrat in November. That means socialists who want to abolish police, abolish prisons, and end every deportation are headed to Congress.
Maher has watched it all and hit his limit.
"Their party is being taken over now," he told Karl. "Every day I hear about a new very radical guy."
He went further. Maher read the DSA platform and called it exactly what it is.
"I've read the quotes from the DSA platform from their own mouths," Maher said. "Don't tell me I'm not seeing what I am seeing. They say things like 'takeover of key industries.' That's communism. There is a definition."
He lost fans for refusing to go along with it. He doesn't regret it.
"I did lose fans because I wasn't gonna go along with some of this crazy stuff on the Left," he said. "I feel very good about that."
Democrats Too Cowardly to Face JD Vance on Their Own Platform
Then came the gut punch for the Democrat Party establishment.
Maher pointed out that Republicans will sit across from him and answer for their record. Vice President JD Vance took the chair last month for a full interview – and faced real questions on immigration, Iran, and election integrity. The Democrats Maher has voted for his entire life – AOC, Kamala Harris, Mamdani himself – won't come on.
Not one of them.
"Democrats are cowardly," Maher told Karl. "They're cowardly."
Karl pressed him on what he told Vice President JD Vance last month during an interview.
"My vote is in play," Maher confirmed. "It can't be Trump running. So I'm not living in communist America."
He named both Republicans he would consider: Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
"Could you see yourself voting for JD Vance?" Karl asked.
"Yes," Maher said. "If this is the Democratic side, yes."
He named one condition – any Republican candidate has to accept a legitimate loss. He pressed Vance on it last month and Vance pushed back hard. Maher is watching anyway – because the Democrat alternative has become something he can no longer defend to himself.
The DSA Socialist Surge That Has JD Vance Eyeing 2028
Democrats are banking everything on the 2026 midterms as a Trump referendum. November is their one lifeline.
But 2028 is a different election entirely.
Trump cannot run again. The ticket will be Vance or Rubio on one side – and if New York is any preview, a DSA-backed socialist on the other. Maher stared at that picture and put his vote up for grabs.
Avila Chevalier – the socialist rising star Maher called "patient zero" – ran on abolishing ICE, abolishing police, and blocking every deportation regardless of the crime.
Before scrubbing her account, she posted that America is "a f—ing disgrace" and boasted about wiping her hand on the American flag. Her primary win in New York's 13th District all but guarantees her a seat in Congress.
Three more like her are coming with her.
Maher spent decades as a reliable cheerleader for the Left – a comedian whose audience applauded every Republican takedown and whose loathing of the Right was part of the act.
Now he is sitting on ABC calling his own party cowards and telling the country the Republican vice president has earned a hard look in 2028.
The Democrats he called out by name are still hiding from the cameras.
