Democrats Are Engineering a Government Shutdown to Flip Congress in November
Senate Democrats are preparing to shut down the government at the peak of campaign season.
They have a strategy: blow up the September 30 deadline – the date federal funding expires and Congress must act or the government closes.
Legacy media outlets will flood the news cycle in shutdown coverage, and drag Republican incumbents into the wreckage seven weeks before Election Day.
Chuck Schumer isn't hiding it. He went public last week accusing Trump of "cheerleading" a government shutdown.
That's the tell. When Schumer starts talking about shutdowns in July, he's not warning anyone. He's laying groundwork.
Comer named the strategy on Fox News: "The Democrats are going to do everything they can to try to shut the government down. That's what they do, they're good at that."
The Last Schumer Shutdown Lasted 43 Days and Democrats Called It a Win
Last October, Schumer didn't blink.
For 43 days, the government sat closed. Travel was impacted and Homeland Security employes went without pay.
Schumer held out until he extracted concessions – then burned eight months of Republican floor time that could have gone toward Trump's legislative agenda.
It worked. So they're running it back.
The difference this time is the calendar. A shutdown that opens October 1 lands directly on top of early voting in dozens of states and runs through the final weeks of Senate and House races across the country.
Furloughed federal workers, closed national parks, delayed Social Security checks – all of it becomes a political weapon against the party in power.
Democrats don't need to win the shutdown fight. They need the shutdown itself.
Schumer Has a September 30 Deadline and a Plan Republicans Keep Ignoring
Comer's counter is simple: attach the SAVE Act – proof of citizenship to register to vote – to the continuing resolution and dare Democrats to vote it down.
If Democrats block it, they own the shutdown. Voters watching their Social Security checks delayed eleven weeks before an election will know exactly who did it and why.
Comer made the stakes plain: "Hopefully the American people will see if there's a shutdown, who's at fault here."
He went further two weeks ago, turning his fire on Senate Republicans who won't hold the line. "Are you that weak? If you vote for a valid ID to be shown to vote, you're gonna get beat in your home state? If you're that weak, you don't need to be a United States senator."
Democrats shut it down for 43 days last fall and never cracked. Schumer knows which side blinks first – and it isn't his.
The midterms are eleven weeks out. A shutdown that opens October 1 and bleeds into late October does more damage to a governing party defending its majority than anything Democrats could buy on television.
Schumer is betting that Republicans will be too disorganized to stop him.
Comer is one of the few Republicans calling it out. Democrats want the shutdown – not a negotiated resolution, not a clean CR, the shutdown itself.
Republican senators have until September 30 to figure out what Schumer is actually doing. Or they can hand him the weapon and act surprised when he uses it.
