The climate change lobby has been trying to eliminate meat from the American diet for years.
Oregon just handed them a weapon that could actually do it.
A Democrat congresswoman read what was in the initiative and said something her party desperately wishes she hadn't.
Oregon IP28 Would Ban Hunting Fishing and Farming and Make Standard Ranching a Felony
Oregon Initiative Petition 28 – the PEACE Act – would strip every legal protection currently shielding hunting, fishing, trapping, and livestock farming from prosecution under Oregon's animal cruelty statutes.
Vegan activists collected more than 126,000 signatures – clearing the required 117,173 threshold – and Oregon voters could decide the measure this November if the Secretary of State verifies those signatures before the July 2 deadline.
Under IP28, artificially inseminating a cow becomes a felony sexual assault of an animal.
Killing a chicken for dinner becomes criminal animal abuse.
Hooking a salmon – even catch-and-release – becomes physical assault under state law.
The Oregon Hunters Association says the measure would turn nearly one million Oregonians into criminals overnight.
Oregon's animal agriculture sector generated $4.4 billion in economic output in 2022 and employed more than 30,000 people.
Hunting and fishing alone pump $1.9 billion into the state economy annually – small businesses, outfitters, and rural communities across the state depend on that revenue to survive.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife runs almost entirely on hunting and fishing license fees – if IP28 passes, that $180 million annual budget collapses, and with it every habitat restoration and wildlife management program in the state.
Democrat Val Hoyle Calls Oregon PEACE Act Insane as Ballot Deadline Approaches
U.S. Rep. Val Hoyle – a Democrat currently running for a third term representing Oregon's 4th District – went on the record and torched the initiative in language almost never heard from the left.
"It's ridiculous," Hoyle said. "It is extreme."
She didn't stop there.
"It would make it illegal to kill any animal except in self-defense. Any animal. Which kills our commercial fishing industry. It – no lie – makes it a felony sex crime to artificially inseminate a cow."
Then she explained exactly how the con works.
"But the signature gatherers are asking people – do you want to help save animals? – and people are signing this."
Hoyle is now working with the Oregon Hunters Association to block the measure before it reaches voters.
Oregon Ballot Measure 2026 Is Backed by 1 Percent of Americans and Would Criminalize Farming and Ranching
Only 1 percent of Americans identify as vegan.
Three percent identify as vegetarian.
That is the entire universe of people driving this initiative – and they have assembled a machine capable of collecting enough signatures to place a measure on the ballot that would criminalize the livelihoods of 30,000 agricultural workers and nearly half a million hunters and anglers.
Outside money is what makes it possible.
International NGOs and activist foundations act as funding amplifiers – organizations that would have zero political reach on their own if they relied on donations from actual vegans.
The initiative even proposes a "Humane Transition Fund" and a "Transitional Oversight Council" to retrain Oregon farmers and ranchers after their industries are criminalized – a government bureaucracy funded by taxpayers to replace the livelihoods of people who built Oregon's food supply.
Val Hoyle says it will fail in November.
She is probably right – and the activists behind IP28 know it too.
This is the third time vegan activists have run this play in Oregon, and every time they lose, they come back with the same petition, the same deceptive signature-gathering pitch, and the same outside money funding the operation.
This time the initiative has something earlier versions didn't – PETA money, national animal rights infrastructure, and a growing coalition of outside organizations treating Oregon as a proving ground.
That is exactly how the Left has always worked.
Transgenderism was a fringe academic theory twenty years ago.
Gay marriage was politically toxic as recently as 2008 – Barack Obama campaigned against it.
The Left doesn't need a majority to win.
It needs a beachhead, a sympathetic court, a few election cycles, and enough outside money to keep the pressure on until the opposition gets tired.
Oregon's farmers and hunters beat this back in 2020 and 2024.
The activists came back anyway – better funded, better organized, and one signature verification away from a statewide vote.
