Now a Michigan Senate Democrat is running the exact same play right before her August primary.
And Megyn Kelly just issued a warning that should terrify every Democrat in the state.
Haley Stevens Fake Accent Goes Viral at Michigan Campaign Stop in Ecorse
Michigan U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens is running for the open Senate seat, and on July 11 she took the stage in Ecorse and delivered a campaign pep talk in an accent that left the entire internet asking the same question: where did that come from?
"I am gonna be workin' on our behalf, I am gonna be tellin' the stories on our behalf," Stevens declared in an accent that nobody in Michigan recognized.
"And you better believe I'm gonna be doin' it with a little bit of joy, a little bit of enthusiasm, a little bit of energy, and a little bit of 'stick it to 'em!'"
The moment went viral.
Michigan natives took to social media to distance themselves, pointing out that Stevens grew up in Rochester Hills – suburban Detroit – and nobody from there has ever talked like that in their lives.
The RNC posted the video.
Conservatives across the country laughed.
Then TMZ caught up with Stevens in the halls of Congress and gave her a chance to explain herself.
"I sound like the people I'm trying to fight for," Stevens told the outlet.
"I'm authentically Michigan," she added.
Nobody was buying it.
Megyn Kelly Connects Haley Stevens Fake Accent to a Pattern That Already Cost Democrats a Senate Seat
Megyn Kelly didn't just mock Stevens – she named the pattern.
"This woman, she's not playing it straight," Kelly said on her show, playing the viral clip side-by-side with older footage of Stevens speaking in her normal voice.
"This is not how she's always talked. She's Jasmine Crockett."
That comparison is devastating – and Kelly knew exactly why it would stick.
Crockett ran for Senate in Texas earlier this year, adopted a thick Southern accent she had never used before, and lost the Democrat primary to state Rep. James Talarico in March.
The fake accent didn't make her more relatable.
It made her look like a politician willing to become whoever the crowd needed her to be.
Stevens is now living inside that same story – with Michigan Democrats deciding her fate on August 4.
Kelly's guest Emily Jashinsky went further: the comparison will end up in a Republican attack ad if Stevens wins the primary.
"That juxtaposition you just played is going to be an ad for Republicans if she wins," Jashinsky said.
"I'm calling it now."
Kelly wasn't finished.
"She's a fraud. She's a fake. She's a phony," Kelly said.
Abdul El-Sayed Michigan Senate Primary Gives Democrats No Good Options
The accent story is a gift Democrats cannot stop unwrapping – with the August 4 primary already underway.
Stevens is running against Abdul El-Sayed, a far-left candidate who backed defunding the police and hit the campaign trail alongside Hasan Piker – the man who told his audience that America deserved 9/11.
Democrat leaders have pulled every institutional lever to stop El-Sayed and hand the nomination to Stevens.
Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer backed her.
Gary Peters – the retiring senator whose seat is up for grabs – endorsed her.
Stevens currently holds a seven-point lead in the Detroit News/WDIV poll, 48.2 percent to El-Sayed's 41.4 percent.
The establishment has done everything possible to make Stevens the nominee.
Then she opened her mouth in Ecorse.
The primary winner faces Republican Mike Rogers in a general election the Cook Political Report rates a toss-up.
Michigan and Georgia are the only two states Trump carried in 2024 where Democrats are now defending Senate seats.
Losing it would be catastrophic for a party facing an uphill battle to flip control of the Senate.
Michigan Senate Race 2026 May Already Be Decided by a Viral Clip
Democrats spent 2024 watching their voters walk away because the party looked fake and disconnected from the country it claimed to represent.
Haley Stevens just gave Republicans the visual proof.
The fake accent, the viral clip, the TMZ hallway confrontation where she doubled down on the act – all of it will land in a 30-second ad if she survives August 4.
"She's been in politics for a long time," Jashinsky observed.
"It is just an absolutely ridiculous act that… will bite her in the a** in this crucial Michigan Senate race."
Megyn Kelly named the trap.
Jasmine Crockett walked into it in Texas and lost her primary in March.
