How the Biden White House Polled Jill Biden While Kamala Harris Got Nothing
The 192-page report commissioned by the Democrat National Committee contains one finding that explains the entire 2024 collapse.
While Jill Biden had years of White House research built around her – her public messaging, her issue portfolio, how she could best advance her husband's presidency – Kamala Harris had nothing.
Not one poll or self-research prepared for the moment Joe Biden quit.
Veteran Democrat strategist Paul Rivera documented what happened when Biden stepped aside in July 2024: "As a result, at the moment of the candidate switch the polling team discovered there was no self-research on the Vice President to guide the development of the research instruments. An incumbent Vice President. With no research to share once she became the nominee."
Democrats scrambled to get three emergency studies into the field.
Emergency. For the person they spent three years telling you was ready to lead the free world.
Rivera was blunt: had the White House invested even a fraction of that effort in Harris, it could have improved Biden's standing and prepared her to lead the ticket.
They chose not to.
The Transgender Ad That Sank Kamala Harris and the 2024 Campaign
Trump's team handed the autopsy its most brutal confirmation.
The "Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you" ad – built from Harris's own words supporting taxpayer-funded gender surgeries for prison inmates – was described by the campaign's own pollsters as "very effective."
The autopsy was unsparing about what that meant: "If the Vice President would not change her position – and she did not – then there was nothing which would have worked as a response."
The campaign drafted a response ad. It tested so badly internally they scrapped it.
Bill Clinton called the campaign and told them to answer the ad directly.
They ignored him.
Harris later wrote in her memoir 107 Days that the ad felt like a "winning message" for Trump – then said she had no regrets refusing to back down on the issue.
Ken Martin and the DNC Autopsy Report Democrats Tried to Bury
Here is what happened after Rivera delivered his findings.
DNC Chair Ken Martin received the report – then buried it.
When that leaked, a small group of DNC officials tried to secretly rewrite it into something more acceptable.
That failed.
Martin released it under pressure from his own party – but not before stamping a red disclaimer on every single page saying the document did not meet his standards.
"It does not meet my standards, and it won't meet your standards," Martin told CNN. "But I am doing this because people need to be able to trust the Democrat Party and trust our word."
Democrat strategist Steve Schale, watching the chaos unfold, called it an "unmitigated s—show."
Martin pledged to release the autopsy when he was elected chair. He buried it instead. A small group of DNC officials tried to quietly rewrite it into something more palatable – that effort collapsed too. \
When he finally released it, he put his own name on a statement saying it wasn't fit to publish. Then he apologized to his party for the mess he created.
The DNC is now raising millions less than its Republican counterparts, Martin's leadership is openly questioned inside the committee, and Democrats are still fighting about whether Rivera's findings are even accurate.
Meanwhile Trump is in the White House for a second term, the border is being secured, and the party that spent four years building research around the First Lady is trying to figure out how to win in 2028.
They built the wrong candidate.
