Troops Slept in Cars to Escape Mold While Biden Spent 59 Million on Migrant Hotels

Biden's FEMA spent $59 million housing illegal aliens in luxury New York City hotels in a single week.

Now a Medal of Honor hero is touring the military bases where troops went a year without hot water.

What Dakota Meyer found when he got out of Washington and walked into actual barracks should make every American furious.

Military Barracks Mold and a 285 Billion Dollar Maintenance Backlog Pentagon Leaders Ignored

The Pentagon has known about this for years.

A 2023 Government Accountability Office investigation documented barracks with sewage overflows, bedbugs, broken elevators, 150 rooms without adequate lighting, and mold covering entire walls.

Twelve of those 31 federal recommendations remain unaddressed as of this year.

The maintenance backlog across Pentagon facilities hit $285 billion in fiscal 2025 – a number that doubled in just five years.

The Marine Corps cut its maintenance funding requests from 80% of estimated need all the way down to 40%.

They chose renovation projects over keeping the lights on and the showers running for the warriors defending this country.

At one base, soldiers chose their cars over their own barracks rather than spend another night without air conditioning.

At others, troops weren't asking for renovation projects – just the materials to patch their own walls.

These are the people this country sends toward bullets.

Biden's Pentagon removed barracks satisfaction questions from its annual military-wide survey because housing was, in their words, "not a priority."

The same GAO documented one barracks building rated "above 90" on the military's own condition scale – while simultaneously being declared uninhabitable.

The evaluation system was measuring paperwork, not reality.

Senator after senator received briefings on barracks conditions and did nothing.

That's not neglect – that's a decision.

Hegseth Sent Medal of Honor Recipient Dakota Meyer to Fix the Military Housing Crisis

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth did what Pentagon leadership refused to do for decades.

He sent in a warrior.

Dakota Meyer isn't a Pentagon bureaucrat who can disappear into the system when things get hard.

He's the only Medal of Honor recipient to reenlist after earning the award.

Hegseth appointed him senior advisor to the Pentagon's Barracks Task Force in October – not to study the problem, not to produce another report, but to fix it.

Meyer said Hegseth gave him unmistakable marching orders: "He expects me to fix it."

He has already visited more than eight installations across all four service branches and plans to reach 30 before the year ends.

Some troops are asking for little more than light bulbs.

At one of those bases, he asked a 19-year-old female soldier what she would change about her living conditions if she could wave a magic wand.

She said she wanted a hot shower – not better food, not a pay raise. Just hot water.

"It's absolutely heartbreaking," Meyer said.

Biden's administration used a program Congress created in 1987 to house homeless veterans to channel over a billion dollars into sheltering illegal aliens instead.

DOGE found the payments – $59 million in a single week – and the FEMA officials who signed off were fired.

More than $1.4 billion flowed through that same program into housing illegal aliens across Democrat-run sanctuary cities.

Same government, same budget, different priorities.

Washington's priorities were never hidden – they were written in every budget line for 20 years.

Meyer named names.

"Don't kid yourself," he told Fox News. "In the past – it wasn't a priority to the leadership."

Pentagon leadership measured success by how much money was "obligated" – Washington-speak for moved around on paper.

Not by whether a 19-year-old soldier could take a shower.

Hegseth is measuring something different: results.

Meyer told Fox News what "fixed" actually means: "Our service members don't, they don't live in our budget lines. They live in the rooms that those budget lines are there to impact."

He has put his own name on the outcome – saying publicly that if the barracks aren't fixed, there is "only one person to blame."

Himself.

That's not how Washington works – that's how warriors do.
