Melania Trump Just Secured $7 Million for Foster Care Kids Congress Forgot

Only 3 percent of kids who age out of foster care ever earn a college degree.

Melania Trump is working to change that.

What she did in Baton Rouge yesterday left a packed Tiger Stadium chanting USA.

LSU Foster Care Scholarship Fund Just Hit 7.2 Million Dollars

The numbers on foster care in America should embarrass every politician in Washington.

Twenty thousand kids walk out of the foster care system every year at age 18 – some with a trash bag of belongings and a bus ticket.

Twenty percent will be homeless within a year and half won't hold a steady job by 24.

Washington has known those numbers for years and done nothing about them.

First Lady Melania Trump decided to stop waiting.

On Saturday, she flew to Baton Rouge, walked into Patrick F. Taylor Hall at Louisiana State University, and announced a $7.2 million permanent scholarship endowment for LSU students who came through the foster care system.

The anchor gift came from MMR Group, led by LSU alumnus James B. "Pepper" Rutland, who committed $5 million to the fund.

75 LSU Foundation donors raised another $2.2 million.

LSU President Wade Rousse said that $5 million will generate roughly $200,000 every single year – covering tuition, fees, books, and room and board for foster youth who make it to Baton Rouge.

The ceremony at Patrick F. Taylor Hall included LSU cheerleaders, the Tiger mascot in a BE BEST T-shirt, and a custom purple-and-gold jersey for the first lady bearing the name MELANIA and the number 14.

Then it moved to Tiger Stadium, where a ceremonial check presentation happened on the field and the Jumbotron lit up with Melania's face.

The Tiger Stadium crowd erupted in USA chants.

Melania Trump Took Her Fostering the Future Bill to Congress and Got Nothing

This did not start in Baton Rouge.

President Trump stood with Melania in the East Room in November 2025 and signed the Fostering the Future executive order – establishing scholarships, housing support, and career pathways for youth aging out of foster care.

By April 2026, Melania was on Capitol Hill telling lawmakers directly that turning that order into permanent law was a "moral imperative."

She called access to education the foster kids' "birthright."

AOC has posted about child welfare more times than anyone can count without passing a single piece of legislation to show for it.

Melania went to the private sector instead.

LSU now has 14 Fostering the Future scholars enrolled this semester.

Alabama has nine.

Twenty-six universities across the country are currently supporting 100 scholars total – and that number is growing because Melania is treating this like a campaign, not a ribbon-cutting.

"While most eyes will be on the athletes today, I encourage you to recognize LSU's Fostering the Future scholars, who are just as remarkable," she told the crowd.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise were both in the building watching it happen.

The game even included a special Melania Trump challenge coin for the opening coin toss, foster-care patches on LSU players' jerseys, and helmet decals with the Fostering the Future logo.

Private Donors Just Outperformed 50 Years of Federal Foster Care Spending

The federal government has poured billions into foster care programs for decades and the college graduation numbers have barely moved.

Pepper Rutland and seventy-five private donors did in one afternoon what fifty years of federal programs never managed.

A permanent endowment does not depend on Washington's annual budget fight and cannot be zeroed out when a committee decides to redirect funds.

That $5 million generates $200,000 every year – no congressional vote required.

Melania has said herself that Congress still needs to act.

The legislative package she pushed in April would update a decades-old federal program and lock in support for foster youth nationwide – including extended services and housing assistance that the executive order alone cannot provide.

But while she waits for Washington to act, she keeps building.

Tens of thousands chanting USA for foster kids at the LSU-Alabama game.

That is what it looks like when someone actually gives a damn.
