Federal agents seized Ilhan Omar's phone and issued more than a dozen subpoenas to her relatives.
Now the man she married in 2009 just made their case for them.
What he admitted about himself in that paper makes her eight-year denial impossible to hold together.
The Sham Marriage Paper That Destroys Her Last Defense
Ilhan Omar married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009, the same man federal investigators believe is her biological brother. For years, his silence was her best defense.
Elmi – Omar's ex-husband and alleged brother – published a paper in August describing what it means to be "a gay man of the East African diaspora" and his fieldwork as shaped by "the complexities of my identity."
Men who prefer men don't marry women.
Omar has maintained for years that the 2009 marriage was real – that Elmi is not her brother, that the whole thing is a right-wing smear campaign.
The only explanation for that marriage is what Omar's first husband Ahmed Hirsi reportedly told his friends – it was arranged "to get him papers."
That's not a theory anymore.
Hirsi was in an Islamic marriage with Omar the entire time she was legally married to Elmi. Nobody disputes it.
Elmi left the country years before Hirsi got around to finalizing the divorce in 2017.
Omar and Elmi had no shared life, no children together, and now – according to Elmi's own words – no reason to have been married at all.
Obama's FBI Found Immigration Fraud Evidence and Walked Away
The New York Times reported that federal investigators under the Obama administration found "some evidence" of immigration fraud during a 2016 probe.
They looked, documented it, and walked away because the five-year statute of limitations had already expired.
Obama's investigators built the case and buried it. Trump's DOJ dug it back up.
Homeland Security Investigations agents raided Omar's Washington, D.C., home on October 12th as part of a criminal fraud investigation into her immigration paperwork.
Before that, agents had already searched her trash for DNA to prove the man she married in 2009 is her biological brother.
JD Vance said in May that the Trump administration believes Omar "definitely committed immigration fraud against the United States."
Border czar Tom Homan confirmed in September the investigation was active.
Obama issued a statement condemning the investigation when Trump's DOJ went public with it – and has been quiet ever since.
The Citizenship Fraud Charge With No Statute of Limitations
A federal court filing identified the congresswoman as "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar."
The last name in that filing – Elmi – is the exact same last name as the man she married.
Trump noticed.
"The last name is incredibly, also the exact last name of her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the person that they say she married and had children with," Trump said at the rally. "Are you allowed to do that?"
Trump said using a false name to be sworn into Congress is fraud and called on Omar to resign.
Omar told MS NOW she had no knowledge of whether Elmi could be related to her.
She was married to him for eight years, and that answer stopped making sense the moment Elmi published his paper.
The Wall Street Journal reported the probe is aimed at stripping Omar of her citizenship – falsification of immigration documents going back to when her family entered the United States, a charge with no statute of limitations and consequences that don't end at resignation.
Elmi's August paper eliminates the last argument Omar had.
To mount any defense now, Omar needs the public to believe she spent eight years married to a gay man and never noticed. Then she needs them to believe his last name matching hers exactly was a coincidence. Then she needs them to accept that Obama's FBI investigating her for fraud was somehow news to her.
That's a lot of things for a sitting member of Congress not to know.
