Jake Tapper spent four years telling America that Joe Biden was sharp, capable, and fit to serve.
Then Trump cut CNN from the White House press pool and Tapper turned to a Trump official for help.
What Mike Waltz said about Tapper's Biden coverage left CNN's star anchor with nothing to say.
The CNN White House Ban Caught the Network Lying to Its Own Viewers
Donald Trump banned CNN, MS NOW (formerly MSNBC), and Politico from White House grounds in mid-September, pulling their press credentials and cutting their pool access after years of what the administration called agenda-driven coverage.
The other four pool networks – ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox – suspended TV pool coverage rather than step in to replace CNN.
A federal judge ordered temporary restoration. It did not hold.
When CNN was scheduled to serve as the television pool for Trump's trip to Tennessee for a college football game, the White House removed the network from Air Force One at the last minute. No replacement pool was named.
CNN told its own viewers nobody was covering the president's pool duties. Real America's Voice was already doing it. The network lied to its own audience – and got caught.
Waltz Shut Down Tapper's Media Bias Defense With a Biden Reminder on Live TV
When UN Ambassador Mike Waltz appeared on State of the Union for what should have been a conversation about China and U.S. foreign policy, CNN host Jake Tapper had a different agenda.
As the interview wound down, Tapper broke from the subject and made his plea directly.
"Before you go, sir, I just want to note, yesterday, the White House barred CNN from fulfilling our pool assignment on behalf of the five major television networks," Tapper said.
"As you know, we all pool coverage, and all of our affiliates and subscribers. I would just ask if you could please convey to President Trump to let CNN back in the pool. It was not OK when President Obama tried to freeze Fox out of the pool back in 2009. And I don't think we want a world where presidents decide who gets to cover them."
A major network anchor – on his own air – asking a Trump official to lobby the president on CNN's behalf.
Waltz did not move.
"Well, I hear you, Jake, but I think we need fair, and objective, and well-sourced reporting," Waltz responded. "And I could tell you, as having been the victim of a lot of this nonsense, my family members, and so many others, we need a free and fair and honest press corps without an agenda that tries to take facts to fit a narrative."
"And whether that is Biden's inability and many issues that he had that was whitewashed, and then people came back around with corrections. Or other issues. So that's a much longer conversation. And President Trump's frustrated."
Waltz was pointing directly at Tapper's own record – the years CNN spent protecting Biden's image while the country watched a president deteriorate in real time, followed by Tapper's book on Biden's cognitive decline that arrived only after Biden was safely out of office.
Tapper's response: every president has been frustrated with the media.
Waltz closed that door too.
"And, by the way, there are over what, 50 seats in the press room. I don't think all of them, like Washington Post or New York Times, are exactly positive towards this administration. So that's a false narrative that it's about negative reporting. We need fair and objective reporting for the country."
When a reporter asked Trump whether he only wants supportive outlets in the pool, Trump was direct: "I want real news, not fake news."
Why the Obama Fox News 2009 Comparison Backfired on Tapper
Tapper invoked Obama's 2009 attempt to freeze Fox out of the press pool as the moral argument for CNN's reinstatement. He chose the wrong example.
Obama's Treasury Department tried to cut Fox from a single interview in October 2009. Every other network stood against it immediately. Fox was back in within hours and Obama backed down.
What happened this time is different.
Trump cut CNN, the other four networks suspended coverage in solidarity, and the standoff dragged on through court orders and credential seizures. That is a longer, messier conflict – and the reason is not hard to explain.
Fox in 2009 was doing aggressive journalism that made the Obama team uncomfortable. CNN spent years burying Trump in near-total negative coverage while its anchors stayed quiet about a president the country could see falling apart in real time.
Tapper handed Waltz a moral argument. Waltz used it as a mirror and handed it back on live television.
The audience watching State of the Union got something CNN rarely delivers: a front-row seat to its own anchor being told, calmly and on the record, exactly what the rest of the country already knew.
