Kamala Harris called every Republican who questioned the 2020 election a threat to democracy.
Now she is warning the country that requiring voters to prove they are American citizens is an attack on democracy.
What she just confessed about Democrat voters should end the debate entirely.
Kamala Harris Opposes Voter ID That 83 Percent of Americans Support
Former Vice President Kamala Harris posted a video sounding the alarm about the SAVE America Act – the Republican-backed election integrity bill currently held up in the Senate.
Her complaint: the bill would force people to prove who they are before they vote.
"This president is trying to push this SAVE Act, which basically would require that for people to register to vote, you're gonna have to have proof of who you are through a passport, which a lot of Americans don't have, or a birth certificate," Harris said.
The problem is that 83% of Americans – including 71% of Democrats – support requiring photo ID to vote, according to an August 2025 Pew Research Center survey.
She was explaining exactly why Democrats need unverified voters to win.
Senator Ashley Moody of Florida had a simple answer for that logic on the Senate floor.
"The SAVE America Act, indeed election integrity efforts, are grounded in a simple common sense, indeed foundational principle, that only American citizens should vote in American elections," Moody said. "I really am dumbfounded that I still have to come to the floor and have this debate with anybody in this chamber."
What the SAVE Act Actually Requires to Vote
Harris suggested the SAVE Act would require a passport or birth certificate and nothing else – leaving millions of Americans locked out.
That is not what the bill says.
The legislation accepts a military ID, a tribal government-issued photo ID, a state-issued driver's license, a nondriver ID, or a U.S. passport – the same documents Americans already carry to board a plane, open a bank account, or pick up a prescription.
Every legal American adult either has one of those documents or can obtain one.
The Supreme Court settled the constitutional question in 2008.
In Crawford v. Marion County Election Board, the Court upheld Indiana's photo ID voting requirement 6-3, ruling that the state's interest in verifying voter identity outweighs what it called a minimal burden on voters' rights.
That precedent has stood for eighteen years.
Harris knows this.
Her own events require photo ID to attend – including an Arizona rally she held during the 2024 campaign.
The rules she opposes for the ballot box she happily enforces at her own front door.
SAVE Act Senate Vote and the 2026 Midterms
The SAVE Act passed the House in February 2026 with bipartisan support.
It now sits in the Senate with a simple 51-vote majority threshold to advance, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune has made passage a top priority heading into the midterms.
Trump has not been subtle about what he sees at stake.
"I think anybody that votes against it shouldn't be allowed to run for office, to tell the truth," Trump said at a Women's History Month event earlier this year.
If the SAVE Act becomes law before November, states must immediately begin requiring citizenship documentation for new voter registrations.
Democrats know exactly what that means for their coalition – which is why Harris just told the country that proving you are an American citizen before voting in an American election is dangerous.
She is arguing that a requirement her own party's voters cannot meet is unfair.
Thirty-six states plus Washington D.C. already have some form of voter ID requirement on the books.
The Left has fought every one of them using the same voter suppression argument they have deployed for two decades.
Every time, the courts have disagreed.
The SAVE Act simply extends basic citizenship verification to federal elections nationwide.
The only people threatened by that requirement are the ones who cannot meet it.
