New Jersey just admitted 6,600 noncitizens were added to its voting rolls – and Democrats called that a small problem.
Now a veteran Democrat strategist is saying something out loud that his party has refused to admit for twenty years.
James Carville just handed Republicans the best weapon of the midterm cycle, and he did it by accident.
Carville Admits Democrats Are Losing the Voter ID Fight in 2026
James Carville went on his podcast Politics War Room and told Democrats to stop fighting voter ID requirements – full stop.
"We are not gonna win the war against some kind of ID," Carville said.
He pointed to his home state of Louisiana, where voters show a driver's license at the polls, and asked why the national party keeps treating that basic standard like an act of oppression.
The numbers Carville cited are not close.
A Fox News poll found 84% of registered voters support photo ID to prove citizenship before voting.
Carville's own figure – 75% – still represents a blowout by any measure in American politics.
That is not a polling gap Democrats can message their way out of.
Carville knows it, and he said so: "Just quit fighting. Go along with it and move to the next thing."
Schumer Blocked the Voter ID Amendment He Said Democrats Supported
Democrats have already been caught in this trap – twice.
In March 2026, Chuck Schumer stood at a Senate press conference and said, "Democrats support voter ID."
Then Senate Democrats blocked a standalone amendment from Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, that would have done exactly that.
Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., killed it on the Senate floor.
Schumer said one thing and did another – in the same week.
That same month, Rep. Shomari Figures, D-Ala., held a town hall and asked his constituents how many of them didn’t have an ID.
Not one hand went up.
Figures had just destroyed his own party's argument in front of a live audience – and Democrats kept fighting anyway.
More than seven in 10 Democrat voters – and 76% of Black voters – support showing a government-issued photo ID to vote, according to a 2025 Pew Research Center poll.
The activists running the party are not listening to their own voters.
New Jersey Put 6600 Noncitizens on the Voter Rolls and Democrats Called It Nothing
New Jersey broke him.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill disclosed that roughly 6,600 noncitizens had wound up on the state's voting rolls after a Motor Vehicle Commission software error registered people who had identified themselves as non-citizens when applying for a driver's license.
Fewer than 400 of them cast ballots.
Democrats used that number to argue the problem was small.
Carville used the same story to argue the problem was real enough that fighting over ID requirements had become a political death sentence.
"It comes across that we don't want to check the eligibility of a voter," Carville said on Politics War Room.
That is a Democrat strategist admitting, on the record, that his party looks like it is protecting illegal votes.
No Republican could have said it better.
Democrats Are Blocking the SAVE Act While Carville Waves the White Flag
Carville drew a careful line.
He’s not endorsing the SAVE Act – the federal legislation that would require documentary proof of citizenship to register and photo ID to vote in federal elections.
His proposal was narrower: make Louisiana's existing driver's license requirement the national standard and call it a day.
Carville’s co-host, Al Hunt, refused even that.
Hunt argued the SAVE Act creates obstacles around birth certificates and passports.
That exchange is the Democrat base in miniature.
The day Carville made his remarks, the House passed a version of the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2027 with the SAVE Act attached.
Six Democrats crossed the aisle to vote for it.
The Senate still needs 60 votes to break a filibuster – and Senate Democrats have shown exactly zero interest in getting there.
Carville can read a poll.
The people running the Senate Democrat caucus answer to a donor class and an activist base that has convinced itself voter ID is suppression, regardless of what 75% of the country thinks.
The Democrat Party is not going to take Carville's advice.
They never do when the advice is to stop doing something that hurts them.
One day it will cost them an election they thought they had won.
