The Democrat Party spent years telling working-class America it was on their side.
Now one of the insiders who built that machine is exposing what was said when the cameras were off.
A Democrat operative walked out of the party she helped build and wrote a book that names every name.
She Raised $50 Million for Democrats and Watched the Party Abandon Working Class Voters
Evan Barker was one of the top fundraisers in the Democrat Party. She organized for Hillary Clinton in 2015, helped fundraise for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cori Bush, and Jasmine Crockett, and by her own account raised tens of millions of dollars for left-wing candidates over a decade inside the party machine.
She was the real thing – a true believer from a union family in Kansas City, Missouri.
Then came a cold evening in late March 2022. Seven months pregnant, Barker stood in the front yard of billionaire Tom Steyer's San Francisco mansion, looking out at the Golden Gate Bridge while waiters circulated with silver trays and champagne flutes clinked around her.
Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez, the executive director of Steyer's NextGen America youth organization, stepped to the microphone and said what the Democrat Party actually believes about working-class voters.
"We won't be getting those voters; they're not coming back – the ones who left and switched to Donald Trump – the future is young people of color!" Ramirez roared to the crowd.
Barker looked around at what she described as a "primarily white and extremely rich crowd" clapping at every word.
She writes in her new book, Nothing Left: Confessions of a Democratic Operative, that her immediate reaction was blunt: "That's a great way to get Donald Trump re-elected."
Tom Steyer Wrote a $60 Million Check to Abandon Working Class Voters in the Heartland
Steyer, who had run for president in 2020, was prepared to allocate $60 million toward the 2022 midterms and hand Ramirez free rein over the spending.
Barker tried to pitch Missouri – a state full of working-class Democrats who had left the party, a place where low-propensity MAGA voters would be less likely to turn out without Trump on the ballot. The races were winnable.
Ramirez shut it down immediately.
"Evan, I can promise you, we will never, ever go to Missouri," she said, with what Barker describes as a smirk across her face.
Missouri had last elected a Democrat statewide in 2018. Texas had not done it since 1994. But chasing a Texas demographic fantasy with Latino youth voters was worth $60 million of Steyer's money. Bringing back the union bricklayers and factory workers in St. Joseph, Missouri? Not worth a dime.
This isn’t an isolated anecdote. It’s the Democrat Party's actual operating strategy – stated by a senior party operative with a billionaire's checkbook behind her.
The Democrat Civil War That Proves Her Right in 2026
Barker traces the working-class collapse directly to Bill Clinton's NAFTA and the trade deals that gutted manufacturing towns across the Midwest.
Her father came from St. Joseph, Missouri – a once-booming industrial hub where the Lee Jeans factory closed in 1996 and abandoned buildings now line streets that once ran on manufacturing wages.
Al Gore won the county surrounding St. Joseph by two points in 2000. Donald Trump won it by twenty-seven in 2016.
The Democrats watched those numbers move and decided the answer was a new coalition – not winning back the voters they lost.
Barker asked her uncle, a bricklayer, Navy veteran, union member for over forty years, and gun owner, whether Democrats look down on people like him. He has voted for Trump since 2016.
He laughed. "Do Democrats look down on me? They don't even look at me at all!"
That answer is worth more than any poll number. Heading into the 2026 midterms, the Democrat Party is proving his point. Socialist Democrats backed by Bernie Sanders and AOC are purging moderates in primaries across New York, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Missouri – running the same demographic coalition theory Ramirez was selling to Steyer's champagne crowd four years ago.
Nothing Left Is the Democrat Insider Book Tearing the Party Apart in 2026
Barker walked out of the 2024 Democrat National Convention during Oprah Winfrey's speech and voted for Donald Trump in November.
Her book, Nothing Left, published July 28 by Threshold Editions, is already ranked in the top 400 on Amazon and hit number one in Social Activist Biographies.
The Ramirez strategy – abandon the heartland, chase demographics, never set foot in Missouri – is the Democrat Party's 2026 midterm plan in everything but name.
Democrats head into November with a socialist insurgency fracturing their primaries and the working-class voters they smirked at in that San Francisco mansion paying close attention.
The party doesn’t even claim to champion the blue collar worker anymore.
Democrats put it on the record. Now everyone can read it.
