Biden Left the Northern Border Unguarded and the Terror Watchlist Numbers Prove It
In fiscal year 2024, 87 percent of all terror watchlist suspects encountered at U.S. land border ports of entry were stopped at the northern border – not the southern one.
That is the number Biden's DHS buried while calling border enforcement racist.
The U.S.-Canada border stretches 5,525 miles – more than twice the length of the southern border – and has only 115 ports of entry compared to 330 along the Mexican border.
Biden gutted enforcement at both borders. Known and suspected terrorists were using Canada as a staging ground to enter the United States.
Border Czar Tom Homan explained why in a recent interview: "Canada's immigration laws are very lax. It doesn't take a lot to get into Canada."
National security threats that cannot enter the United States directly can enter Canada first – then slip across the northern border in a single step.
That is Homan's assessment, drawn from intelligence reports and personal experience touring all northern border sectors over the past three months.
Border Czar Homan Just Unveiled His Northern Border Security Plan
"The next two years, I'm really concentrating on the northern border," Homan told Epoch Times senior editor Jan Jekielek.
"The southern border is the highest security we've ever had."
Last month, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced that daily apprehensions at the southern border were 94 percent lower than under the Biden administration – a drop CBP described as making the border "more secure than at any point in history."
With that fire out, Homan said the administration now has "the money and the time" to redirect resources north.
Some sectors need more boots on the ground. Others are requesting drones and physical barriers.
Drug trafficking is a parallel crisis along the northern border, one already hitting Indian reservations on the American side of the line.
The Trump administration has been working with tribal communities on enforcement, and Homan said that work needs to expand.
The House of Representatives passed the Northern Border Security Enhancement and Review Act on September 16, requiring DHS to evaluate northern border threats every two years and revise its security strategy based on those findings. The bill also mandates classified threat briefings to Congress.
It also directs CBP's Air and Marine Operations to start measuring how effectively they are securing the stretches of border between official crossings – a standard that has never been applied to the northern border.
The bill now heads to the Senate.
The Canada Border Crisis Democrats Spent Four Years Ignoring
Democrats spent Biden's entire term insisting that deporting illegal aliens was immoral and that the real answer was amnesty.
They were not paying attention to the numbers.
In fiscal year 2023, 85 percent of terror watchlist encounters at land border ports of entry occurred at the northern border.
The pattern is not new.
Ahmed Ressam – the "millennium bomber" who plotted to blow up Los Angeles International Airport on New Year's Eve 1999 – entered the United States from Canada.
That route has never been properly closed.
Border Patrol staffing at the northern border sat frozen from fiscal year 2009 straight through the Biden years – through record-breaking illegal crossings and surging watchlist encounters alike.
Homan is the first administration official to acknowledge openly that securing the southern border was step one, and that step two is coming for the 5,525 miles nobody was watching.
Biden never took step one, leaving both borders exposed for four years. Trump fixed one of them. Homan is coming for the other.
