It’s getting more and more difficult to find any movies worth watching these days.

Hollywood executives seem more concerned with checking social justice checkboxes than they are with producing compelling stories.

But now Tom Cruise wrote one X post that has Top Gun fans on the edge of their seats.

Top Gun soars into rarified air

In 1986, Top Gun flew into movie theaters and became a massive hit and a cultural phenomenon.

A long 36 years later, the Top Gun team reconnected and thrilled fans with the high-anticipated sequel, Top Gun: Maverick

At that time, the patriotic themes within the movie were fairly standard fare.

However, an apolitical, non-woke movie in 2022 was a welcomed change of pace for movie-goers, and they rewarded the filmmakers in a big way.

Top Gun: Maverick broke box office records – surpassing $715 million domestically and soaring to nearly $1.5 billion globally – the 12th highest-grossing film of all time, and at the time, the highest-grossing movie since COVID-19 hit.

Two years later, fans are trying not to lose that loving feeling for the franchise, and are hoping the Tom Cruise-led franchise becomes a trilogy.

Cruise’s message to fans on Top Gun Day has some fans believing Top Gun 3 may get to theaters faster than expected.

Tom Cruise celebrates Top Gun Day

Each year, some of the film’s biggest fans celebrate Top Gun Day on May 20.

The date was picked to honor the original release date of the original movie 38 years ago.

And the franchise’s 61-year-old leading man was eager to partake in the festivities.

“It’s incredible to look back on the thirty-eight years of Top Gun,” Cruise tweeted. “To the fans who have been with us since the start, there wouldn’t be a Top Gun Day without you.”

In his tweet, Cruise also included some behind-the-scenes pictures from the production of the first movie.

The pictures are only serving to fan the flames of anticipation for the production of Top Gun 3

Top Gun 3 production update

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed to People that production has begun on a third Top Gun film.

And Bruckheimer added that Cruise has given the thumbs up to the story.

“We’re working on [‘Top Gun 3’],” he said. “We pitched Tom a story he liked. But he’s a very in-demand actor, and he’s got a lot of movies lined up, so we have to wait and see.”

The man who played Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is currently working on Mission: Impossible 8

But Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick co-star Jennifer Conley is reportedly on board for the third flight.

As, too, is the man who Maverick may eventually pass the torch to, Miles Teller.

But for now, fans are left looking to the sky and waiting for more details on their favorite franchise.
