Costco is one of America’s favorite places for buying all sorts of goods.
From groceries to electronics, the wholesale store offers anything people could want.
But the FDA is demanding a massive Costco recall that will leave you rolling in laughter.
Costco announces massive recall
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just sent out a recall demand letter to Costco for over 79,000 pounds of its Kirkland Signature brand butter.
The reason for the recall has left Americans scratching their heads in confusion, particularly since there was no discovered issue with the butter itself.
The justification for the recall had to do with the packaging – the butter packing did not warn consumers that the everyday kitchen item contained milk.
The packages of butter for both salted and unsalted butter did note in the ingredients that the product contained “cream,” but there was not a separate designated allergy warning that noted that the butter “contains milk” – even though that’s self-evident.
While most people who chimed in on the topic on the internet appeared confused about the decision, one comment continued to repeatedly show up – “it’s butter.”
The internet reacts to FDA recall announcement
Libertarian commentator Spike Cohen took to X where he laughed about the decision by the FDA over the decision to recall and destroy the nearly 80,000 pounds of butter over something that most people view as self-explanatory.
“80,000 pounds of Costco butter was just recalled, because the label doesn’t say that it contains milk,” started Cohen. “It’s butter.”
“News articles are telling people how they can return, or safely dispose of, the butter,” he continued. “It’s butter.”

Another user jokingly offered to dispose of everyone’s Kirkland Signature butter.
“Can y’all please safely dispose of it at my house?” joked the social media user. “I have a lot of holiday baking to do.”
“Next they’ll recall beef that might contain cow,” another person added.
Alongside many of the jokes was criticism of the government for feeling the need to throw away tens of thousands of pounds of the daily-use kitchen staple – a move that will undoubtedly result in price increases for working-class Americans due to the basic economics of supply and demand.
“If you need to government to tell you that butter is a dairy product then… well, I can’t help you God I loathe the state.”

“To be called ‘Butter’ it must contain milk or milk derivatives,” correctly noted another social media user. “Talk about useless government.”
The CDC made their own note in the recall to claim that milk is one of the top foods that “account for most serious allergic reactions in the United States.”
But most Americans were disgusted with the decision due to the amount of food waste that resulted from something seemingly so small of an error.
“Rather than waste 80,000 pounds of butter why don’t they print stickers that say “Contains Milk” and save perfectly good food?” one disappointed X user complained. “So wasteful.”
Since the recall was announced, the FDA has yet to note any illness or adverse reactions from Kirkland Signature butter as a result of the error.
