Adam Sandler’s earliest movies are still some of the best and most popular of his career.

Now he could be starring as one of his most beloved characters again.

And social media went bananas after Dan Patrick strongly hinted that this classic Adam Sandler comedy is getting a sequel.

Sequels are all the rage in Hollywood these days – the industry hasn’t come up with an original idea in decades.

But one of the biggest comedies of the 1990s never got one.

The 1996 classic Happy Gilmore is one of the most popular movies of comedian Adam Sandler’s career.

Now, he could be playing the iconic character once again based on a recent report.

Sportscaster Dan Patrick teases Happy Gilmore sequel is a go

Former ESPN SportsCenter Anchor Dan Patrick has a longstanding relationship with Sandler and has made an appearance in over 10 of his films, starting with 1998s The Waterboy. On a recent episode of his nationally syndicated sports radio show, Patrick revealed that Sandler has reached out to him about a part in a Happy Gilmore sequel.

He shared a text message exchange he had with the comedian about the film.

“Sandman, just trying to finalize my schedule for the upcoming year. How much time should I take off for the sequel to Happy Gilmore?” Patrick wrote.

“A few days, but I’ll let you know when there’s a script. Still figuring a lot out,” Sandler replied.

“I’m just kidding,” Patrick said.

“You’re in it, bro. You play you,” Sandler responded.

Patrick told his audience that Sandler “knows that I don’t like playing me in a movie — I’ve kind of mastered that. I like playing the villain or a love interest.”

He played himself in his first Sandler film, The Waterboy.

And that exchange will add more fuel to the fire that a Happy Gilmore sequel is finally a go after nearly 30 years.

Shooter McGavin says he’s seen a script for the sequel

Patrick’s revelation comes after Actor Christopher McDonald – who played the villain in Happy Gilmore, Shooter McGavin – told Cleveland, Ohio sports talk radio station 92.3 The Fan that he was shown a script for the sequel by Sandler.

“I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,’” McDonald recounted. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that?’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.”

Deadline reported that a potential Happy Gilmore 2 would be released through Netflix, where Sandler and his production company, Happy Madison, have a deal.

Comedy fans could be finally getting a sequel to one of the most beloved comedies of Adam Sandler’s career.
