There are a number of reasons why criminals get caught by law enforcement.

But it’s their own fault more often than not.

And one Michigan man just earned the title of “world’s dumbest criminal” for the way he appeared for a Zoom court session.

Some crimes require criminals to pull off genius-level planning and logistics without getting caught by law enforcement.

But these types of crimes are rare and don’t happen very often.

Only a small percentage of criminals are super intelligent – or even semi-intelligent.

And while most have an average level of intelligence at best, sometimes criminals get caught because of their own stupidity.

As was the case with 44-year-old Michigan resident Corey Harris, as he recently made a decision that could earn him the title of “world’s dumbest criminal.”

And it was all caught on a Zoom recording.

On May 15, Harris was set to appear in court via a Zoom hearing over charges resulting from a prior arrest in Pittsfield Township.

Harris was arrested for driving with a suspended license.

His May 15 court hearing was conducted using a Zoom call.

The public defender and Judge Cedric Simpson appear on the screen, and the public defender announces that Harris will soon be joining the call.

A few seconds later, Harris pops up on the screen for the Zoom hearing.

But despite the fact that he was appearing in court after being arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license, Harris used his cell phone to connect to the Zoom call while he was driving in his car.

“Mr. Harris, are you driving?” a shocked Judge Simpson asked.

“Actually, I’m pulling into my doctor’s office, actually,” Harris responded. “Just give me one second, I’m parking right now.”

Once Harris parked the car, the Judge asked him “Are you stationary?”

“Yes, I am,” Harris answered.

The public defender requested an adjournment for two to four weeks.

But Simpson pointed out one huge problem with the hearing.

“So maybe I don’t understand something,” Simpson began before asking, “This is a driving with a suspended license?”

“That is correct, your honor,” the public defender told the Judge.

“And he was just driving, and he didn’t have a license,” the Judge said, clearly very confused by what she was witnessing.

“He’s suspended and he’s just driving,” Simpson added, to which the public defender responded, “Yes, he is your honor.”

Harris’ boneheaded move infuriated Simpson.

Instead of granting the adjournment, Simpson revoked Harris’ bond and ordered him to turn himself into the local jail by 6 p.m. that day or face a bench warrant for his arrest with no bond.

According to public records, Harris is scheduled to appear in court on June 5.
