Darline Graham wants South Carolina voters to give her a full six year term in the Senate.
She gave voters a reason to hesitate on giving her a promotion.
Megyn Kelly just said what nobody in South Carolina's GOP establishment wanted to hear.
Darline Graham Says She Is Not Informed on National Security at South Carolina Senate Runoff Debate
Darline Graham and Rep. Ralph Norman squared off in a debate ahead of the GOP Senate Primary runoff on August 25 at the historic Newberry Opera House in South Carolina.
Moderator Greta Van Susteren asked a straightforward question: Are Taiwan and the South China Sea national security issues for the United States?
Darline Graham asked her to repeat it.
Van Susteren did.
"I'm just going to be honest here," Graham said. "I'm not that informed on national security."
The audience booed.
She kept going. "But I do support the military. My brother was in the Air Force for 33 years, so I will do everything I can to support the military. My dad was in the Army. I'm not a polished politician up here."
Darline Graham could not answer whether Taiwan matters to American security.
Rep. Ralph Norman – her runoff opponent – kept his response measured.
"By her choice, she's running for the United States Senate," Norman said. "It's a six-year term. You need to get fully versed in what issues you're going to be dealing with. This isn't a get training on the job, you can't do that."
After the debate, Graham told reporters South Carolinians were "worried about their pocketbooks more than they're worried about the South China Sea, quite honestly."
Then she went on Hannity to clean it up.
"I, I, I tripped up on one question last night," she told Sean Hannity. "Of course, Taiwan is our friend."
The Hannity appearance made it worse.
Megyn Kelly Calls Darline Graham Disqualifying on National Security
Megyn Kelly didn't soften it on SiriusXM.
"I'm mortified by that answer," Kelly said. "It's not really exactly her fault. Although she did accept the appointment, but has no one looked into whether she knows anything about politics, world events, international events? This actually is an important thing to understand as a U.S. senator."
Kelly said Norman left his moment on the table.
He should have said it out loud.
"She's a sympathetic figure, but he should have said, with respect, I understand Darlene is grieving her brother, but she has no business being a U.S. senator and not able to answer that question," Kelly said. "Guys are always too afraid to hit women – not physically, rhetorically in a political debate."
RealClearPolitics co-founder Tom Bevan was on Kelly's show and didn't hold back.
"She didn't get anything through osmosis from her brother about foreign policy," Bevan said. "That's all he talked about."
Bevan went further.
"People don't know anything about her other than that she is Lindsey Graham's sister. They had two weeks to find out, and this is the thing that they found out – which is she knows nothing about foreign policy, and that's going to fill the void. I think she did just lose this race."
Ralph Norman Has the Conservative Record South Carolina Needs in the Senate
Darline Graham had every institutional advantage heading into the debate.
Trump endorsed her, Tim Scott endorsed her, and Rep. Russell Fry endorsed her after finishing third in the first primary.
The establishment lined up behind the sympathy candidate.
Ralph Norman is something else entirely.
Heritage Action gives him a perfect rating. His lifetime Liberty Score sits at 98 percent. Club for Growth and Turning Point USA both back him. Rick Scott, Mike Lee, Jim DeMint, and Mark Meadows all endorsed him.
Norman has been fighting in the House Freedom Caucus since 2017. He knows how the Senate kills good legislation before it ever reaches Trump's desk.
"The institutions, particularly the U.S. Senate, have hindered good legislation," Norman said. "We can't afford to tolerate that any longer."
Trump's second-term agenda doesn't pass itself. It needs senators who will fight for it when the establishment pushes back. Norman has spent nine years proving he's that senator.
The foreign policy stumble exposed the bigger problem: nobody knows what Darline Graham actually believes or how she'll vote when the establishment pressures her.
Lisa Murkowski endorsed her. The same Lisa Murkowski who was the first Republican senator to oppose the SAVE Act.
South Carolina doesn't need a Murkowski ally in Lindsey Graham's seat.
Darline Graham told South Carolinians she stumbled on one question. Megyn Kelly told the rest of the country she has no business being in the Senate.
