And Charles just reminded them exactly where they stand after their shenanigans.
No Royal Titles, No Duties, No Reset After UK Return
King Charles III issued a formal letter through Lord Benyon, the Lord Chamberlain, making clear that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's return to the United Kingdom changes absolutely nothing about their status.
The couple is not rejoining the working royal family.
Their His and Her Royal Highness titles remain suspended.
Their charitable work is a personal matter – not royal business.
"In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests," the letter stated.
The King released the letter publicly – an unusual move that ITV News royal editor Chris Ship called "a shot across the bows."
That was intentional.
The Spectacular Collapse of Megxit
Harry and Meghan left Britain in 2020 with a bold message: they didn't need the royal family.
They were going to build a media empire in California, a humanitarian brand, a global platform on their own terms.
Six years later, it's gone.
Netflix cancelled their content deal and the Spotify podcast went away.
And now the couple that declared independence from the Crown just moved themselves and their two young children back to Britain and into a home in the Cotswolds.

King Charles Timed the Letter to Block Their Comeback
Charles didn't wait for Harry and Meghan to settle in and slowly reintroduce themselves to the British public – he issued the formal guidance the moment they arrived, before they could create any ambiguity about what role they now play.
The letter was circulated to official and state organizations specifically to prevent anyone from treating Harry and Meghan's charity appearances as royal engagements.
If you see them at an event, don't roll out the royal treatment.
They forfeited that in 2021 when they sat down with Oprah Winfrey and called their own family racist on global television.
The Netflix series in 2022 drove the point home.
Harry finished the job with Spare, his 2023 memoir that catalogued every private grievance he could remember.
The King just made the accounting official.
Prince Harry's Security Fight Has No Happy Ending
One line in Charles's letter carried particular weight: security questions should continue to go to "the relevant police authorities."
Charles wasn't offering comfort – he was closing a door.
Harry fought all the way to the High Court for the right to taxpayer funded police protection – and lost.
His family now relies on private security – no armed officers, no government advance teams, no coordination with British intelligence.

Royal experts say Prince William has no interest in a reconciliation. The titles are frozen. Archie and Lilibet will grow up in Britain without royal standing. That's the bill for six years of grievance politics, and it came due the moment the plane landed.
Charles told them you're private citizens, not royals.
Harry and Meghan walked out on their own, and they walked back in the same way.
