Democratic socialists spent all summer knocking out House incumbents and the party did nothing to stop it.
Now even one of the most famous Democrats alive is warning his party they are headed for disaster.
James Carville just said something that was once unthinkable about the midterm elections.
Carville Warned Democrats Would Be Hostage to Democratic Socialists With a Five-Seat House Majority
Speaking on Bill Kristol's Bulwark on Sunday podcast this weekend, the legendary Clinton strategist dropped something no Democratic spin doctor can clean up.
"I would rather the Republicans keep the House by five than the Democrats win by five," Carville said – because a slim Democratic majority would leave House leaders "hostage to the DSA."
That is James Carville – the man who put Bill Clinton in the White House – openly admitting he would rather Republicans control Congress than watch his own party win power they cannot actually use.
He spelled out why Hakeem Jeffries is trapped, saying Hakeem "cannot move" – "There's no place for him to go."
He named John Fetterman by name, warning that a tight Senate margin would mean Fetterman keeping Chuck Schumer up all night reaching for Pepto-Bismol as the socialist wing demands its price for every vote.
That is where the Democratic Party stands two weeks before the midterms.
Democratic Socialists of America Toppled Three House Democrats in 2026 Primaries
The Democratic Socialists of America toppled at least three incumbent House Democrats in the 2026 primaries – in New York City and Denver – replacing career legislators with political newcomers who had never won an election before.
The DSA now counts more than 120,000 members nationwide and a primary winning streak that stunned even the party's own leadership.
Carville had been warning about exactly this since June, calling for a party "schism" and declaring some DSA-aligned candidates had "no place" in the Democratic Party.
He warned in July that far-left primary wins do not stay in deep blue districts – they drag the whole party toward positions that cost Democrats in swing states like Wisconsin and Michigan when November arrives.
By August he was calling DSA members a "pack of fools" and demanding they scrub the word "Democratic" from their name entirely, arguing the organization was a fraud being run on real Democrats.
The party's leadership did not listen, and Hakeem Jeffries spent the summer publicly distancing himself from the DSA's agenda while welcoming every DSA primary winner into his caucus with open arms anyway.
Incoming Socialists Already Refuse to Commit to Hakeem Jeffries as House Speaker
Two DSA-backed candidates expected to win their November races – Darializa Avila Chevalier in New York's 13th District and Melat Kiros in Colorado's 1st – already told Politico they will not commit to voting for Jeffries as Speaker of the House.
Their price: cut U.S. aid to Israel and pass Medicare for All.
Kiros went further, describing the potential Democratic majority not as a chance to legislate but as groundwork for a 2028 trifecta to deliver what she called "massive transformational changes."
The same socialists who spent 2026 toppling Democratic incumbents are now the votes Jeffries needs to become Speaker – and they have already told him it will cost him.
In a five-seat majority, every socialist vote is a hard veto – any bill Jeffries wants to pass can be killed the moment he refuses their demands, and they know it.
Now the bill is coming due, and Carville saw it coming in June.
The Squad made Nancy Pelosi's final years miserable with a larger majority and members who were not openly threatening her speakership – Jeffries faces the same faction with fewer seats, bigger demands, and no Pelosi to keep the lid on if he becomes speaker.
The DSA spent all of 2026 replacing Democrats, not joining them.
When the new Congress is seated in January, Jeffries could face a choice with no good answer: give the socialists what they want, or watch the speaker's gavel go to a Republican on the floor.
James Carville already knows how this ends – which is why he would rather lose the House than win it.
