Even the most imaginative movie fans could never envision a world in which William Wallace meets Dirk Diggler.
But it’s apparently about to happen – kind of.
And that’s why Hollywood is coming apart at the seams after Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson teamed up to revolutionize cinema forever.
Gibson starts his comeback tour
Few directors have a track record of success that can rival that of Mel Gibson.
The action-adventure actor dipped his toes into the directing space with 1993’s The Man Without a Face, which he also starred in.
He followed that drama with three consecutive massive hits that were also met with critical acclaim: Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ, and Apocalypto.
Following a slew of controversies, Gibson’s movie-making days took a hiatus, with his last directorial role coming in 2016 with Hacksaw Ridge.
But in recent years, movie-going audiences are showing forgiveness for the Lethal Weapon star as he’s dipped his toes back in the acting waters.
Gibson has made appearances in recent films like, Dragged Across Concrete, Fatman, and Father Stu, alongside Mark Wahlberg.
But for the first time in nearly a decade, Gibson is returning to the directors chair, and he’s bringing Wahlberg along for the dark ride.
A first look at Flight Risk
A new trailer has been released for Gibson’s latest directorial effort, Flight Risk.
Flight Risk stars Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Dockery of Downton Abbey fame, and Topher Grace who is most remembered for his role in That 70’s Show.
And it appears as if that’s the entire cast.
Mad Mel’s new movie is classified as an action thriller.
“A pilot transports an Air Marshal accompanying a fugitive to trial,” the IMDB synopsis reads. “As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.”
Gibson is known for taking big risks with his films, and Flight Risk appears to be no different – especially in his usage of the movie’s biggest star.
Mark Wahlberg like you’ve never seen him before
While he does have a wide range as an actor, Wahlberg is mostly known for two types of roles.
Wahlberg delivers as a fast-talking comedian in lighter-hearted flicks like The Other Guys and Daddy’s Home.
Meanwhile, he also hits home runs as the badass hero in movies like The Departed and Arthur the King.
But in Gibson’s new feature, Wahlberg will be returning to his early roots – as a psychopathic villain.
Flight Risk will give fans a glimpse of the dark side of Wahlberg like they haven’t seen since he played David McCall opposite Reese Witherspoon in 1996’s Fear.
However, in Fear, and many other Wahlberg hits, the former Marky Mark is cast in the role of the heart throb.
He’s made a career of playing characters that men want to be, and women want to be with.
But in Flight Risk, Gibson has Wahlberg playing a somewhat out of shape, aging, bald psychopath.
It’s the type of role that should really challenge Wahlberg’s chops.
Flight Risk promises to be very violent and very entertaining
Another risk Gibson is taking is the use of extreme violence.
Of course, Gibson is no stranger to directing violent films.
Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ, and Apocalypto all are known for violent scenes that have audiences with weaker stomachs covering their eyes or turning away.
And according to World of Reels’ Jordan Ruimy, it appears Flight Risk will be next on Gibson’s list of violent movies.
“What I do know about Flight Risk — and based on a test screening that occurred a few months back — is that it’s violent and VERY entertaining,” Ruimy wrote. “I wouldn’t expect anything else from ‘Mad Mel.’ Apparently, Wahlberg goes full gonzo with his performance here, and Gibson’s direction is muscular and strong.”
Fans won’t have to wait long checking in on Flight Risk – it lands in theaters starting January 24.
