Gavin Newsom fancied himself the leader of the resistance against Donald Trump.
But when things got tough, he was singing a different tune.
And Gavin Newsom waved the white flag of surrender in one fight with Donald Trump.
Gavin Newsom threatens to veto bill expanding California’s sanctuary law
California Governor Gavin Newsom has his eye on running for President in the 2028 Election.
He went out of the way to pick a fight with President Donald Trump shortly after the election by announcing the California State Legislature would hold a special session to try and Trump-proof the state.
Newsom sees battling the Trump administration for the next four years as his winning ticket in a Democrat Primary.
But he raised eyebrows when he announced that he would veto a bill by Democrat lawmakers to expand California’s sanctuary law.
Assembly Bill 15 is a bill being considered in the California State Legislature that would prohibit the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation from working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials.
More than 10,000 illegal aliens convicted of felonies in California’s prisons have been transferred to ICE since Newsom took office in 2019.
Newsom wants California prison officials to have limited communications with ICE when an illegal alien is about to be released.
“ICE will determine how it will proceed with its enforcement of federal law,” Newsom said.
The California Governor vetoed a similar law passed by the legislature last year.
Newsom plays the long game with ICE
Newsom’s announcement comes after Attorney General Pam Bondi filed a lawsuit against New York over the state’s Green Light Law that blocks the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles from turning over information about illegal aliens who have driver’s licenses to the federal government.
Bondi argued that New York was violating federal law by prohibiting communications between the state and federal law enforcement.
“Border Czar” Tom Homan is overseeing the Trump administration’s effort to deport illegal aliens.
He warned that politicians who interfere with mass deportation could face criminal charges.
Bondi left the door open to bringing criminal charges if politicians wanted to be hardheaded.
“We’re going to see what they do next,” Bondi said. “We don’t want to sue you. We don’t want to prosecute people. We want people to comply with the law.”
Newsom knows he’s going to need a massive federal disaster relief bill from Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress after the Los Angeles wildfires.
He doesn’t want to thumb his nose at Trump when he’s going to go hat in hand to Washington, D.C. to ask the rest of the country to bail out California.
The California Governor can also read the tea leaves from the 2024 Election.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris went down in flames to defeat in part because of her support for unchecked illegal immigration.
Newsom realizes that defending illegal aliens who’ve been convicted of violent crimes is a political loser.
That’s a position that would show up in attack ads in 2028.
Everything that Gavin Newsom is doing is with his future Presidential campaign in mind.
