Republicans are fighting to pass the SAVE Act to stop noncitizens from voting.
CNN has dismissed noncitizen voting as a right-wing conspiracy theory.
And a CNN host brought a Democrat governor on air to prove illegal aliens aren't voting – and it backfired instantly.
CNN Erin Burnett Pushes Noncitizen Voting Conspiracy Theory With the Wrong Guest
CNN anchor Erin Burnett opened the segment by declaring that Homeland Security agents scanning voter rolls for illegal alien registrants were doing so "despite a lack of evidence of any major fraud or any widespread fraud at all."
Then she handed the microphone to New Jersey Democrat Governor Mikie Sherrill.
This is the same Mikie Sherrill who stood before cameras in Trenton six weeks ago and confirmed that her state's Motor Vehicle Commission had been registering illegal aliens to vote since June 2023 – 6,600 registered, 400 of them voted.
"This entire situation is unacceptable," Sherrill said at the time.
So when Burnett needed the definitive voice to tell America that illegal alien voting doesn't happen – she picked the woman who already testified that it does.
Burnett's complaint about the DHS agents is telling on its own.
Hundreds of Homeland Security agents have been assigned to scrub voter rolls for illegal alien registrants ahead of November's midterms – a deployment the left-wing media has treated as an authoritarian power grab.
What Burnett left out is that those agents were responding to documented evidence: DHS announced earlier this summer that a review of public voter data found more than 250,000 potential illegal alien registrants across New Jersey, Nevada, California, and Pennsylvania.
New Jersey alone was flagged with tens of thousands of questionable registrations before Sherrill confirmed that at least 6,600 of them were real.
Mikie Sherrill Refuses DOJ Access to New Jersey Voter Rolls
Sherrill told CNN she has demanded evidence from the Trump administration.
This is the same Sherrill who refused to hand that evidence over to the Department of Justice.
After the July disclosure, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon sent Sherrill a letter demanding the names, addresses, and countries of origin of all 6,600 illegal aliens – plus the 400 who voted, including which elections they participated in.
Sherrill said no.
"I'm not in the habit of turning over private identifying information of the citizens of New Jersey," she said.
A federal judge later dismissed the Trump administration's lawsuit seeking New Jersey's unredacted voter rolls – the same rolls Sherrill already admitted contained illegal registrations.
The DOJ has vowed to appeal.
So the sequence is this: Sherrill acknowledges the illegal registrations exist, blocks federal investigators from examining them, then goes on national television to demand evidence that they exist.
Dhillon's response was direct: Sherrill's "refusal to cooperate with federal law enforcement does nothing to protect law-abiding NJ voters."
New Jersey Republicans have been demanding an independent investigation of the Motor Vehicle Commission and the Division of Elections since July – and nineteen House Republicans sent Sherrill a formal letter pressing her for answers on which elections were affected and whether any race was decided by a margin smaller than the number of illegal ballots cast.
Sherrill's three-page reply did not answer either question.
SAVE Act Supporters Now Have Their Proof
When Sherrill argues that removing illegal aliens from voter rolls amounts to stealing an election – and Burnett nods along – they are making a concession neither intended.
If purging illegal alien registrants only damages one party, that is the logical conclusion of the argument they made on CNN, not a Republican talking point.
The White House has been pushing the SAVE America Act – which would require proof of citizenship to register in federal elections – through a Senate that has kept it in limbo since the House passed it 218-213 in February.
Former White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president is "hell-bent on getting to the bottom of this" and that New Jersey is exactly why the SAVE America Act must pass.
Democrats have spent two years calling that bill voter suppression.
New Jersey just spent six weeks proving why it exists.
Sherrill's answer is to go on CNN and say the problem she already confirmed doesn't exist.
Burnett's answer is to let her.
