Trump called Abdul El-Sayed a total communist at a Nebraska rally.
Now leaked audio from a private New York City fundraiser reveals AOC has much bigger plans riding on that race.
What she admitted behind closed doors about her real agenda should terrify every Republican heading into November.
El-Sayed and AOC Used a Private New York Fundraiser to Map Out a Democratic Socialist Takeover
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told Democrats the hotly contested Michigan Senate race was the proving ground for the socialist experiment.
"What we do is that we break open the entire political calculus of America – period," Ocasio-Cortez said, per audio of her remarks obtained by ABC News.
"If Abdul can win in Michigan, anybody can win anywhere. We are going to break the electoral map everywhere, everywhere."
Michigan is a test launch for socialist politics in states that were never supposed to welcome it.
El-Sayed is no reluctant moderate trying to hold a battleground seat.
He wants Medicare for All, a ban on corporate PAC money, and he can't stop himself from defending Iran on Fox News when nobody asked him to.
Martha MacCallum pressed him Monday over past remarks suggesting America should be "curious" about what drives terrorists to commit attacks.
He pushed back – then immediately pivoted to criticizing "the war in Iran."
MacCallum fired back Iran, she said, "created a huge threat to the neighborhood and killed thousands of American citizens."
El-Sayed's response: "War is a system of violence."
El-Sayed also told attendees at the New York fundraiser that total spending in the Michigan Senate race could hit $200 million – and he called the race "for all the marbles."
He's right about that part.
AOC 2028 Presidential Run Now Depends on What Happens in the Michigan Senate Race
AOC is polling fourth among the top 2028 Democratic presidential contenders – behind Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom, and Pete Buttigieg.
A win in a swing state proves that socialism travels outside the Bronx, and El-Sayed is how she gets there.
She called it a "generational project" in the leaked audio – saying Democrats are "up against not just an ascendant and fascist right wing" but also "people with extremely small imaginations about what is possible in America."
She means the Democrat establishment.
El-Sayed told the fundraiser crowd he'd spoken with several potential 2028 contenders – then challenged anyone who doubts what "America really wants, needs and deserves" to watch what happens in Michigan.
His race is a rehearsal for a socialist presidential campaign – and the voters aren't cooperating.
A Fox News poll showed Rogers leading El-Sayed 51 to 47% – with 54% of Michigan voters saying El-Sayed is too extreme for the state.
He's also underperforming with black voters, women, and suburbanites – the exact coalition Democrats need in a midterm election.
El-Sayed is only pulling 69% support from Democrats who don't identify with the Democratic Socialists of America.
In a state Democrats need to flip the Senate, their nominee is bleeding his own base.
Even Bill Maher went on CNN over the weekend to warn that whatever happens in November, Democrats are going to walk away convinced it was an endorsement of "the insanity that a good part of the party wants."
AOC is already counting on exactly that misreading.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Has Backed Democratic Socialists in Swing States Before and Lost Every Time
Every win AOC has ever celebrated came in a Democratic primary – where the only voters she had to convince already agreed with her.
Every time she backs a candidate in a real swing contest, the results tell a different story.
DSA-backed candidates sweeping primaries in Brooklyn and Queens don't prove the left can win a general election in contested territory.
They prove that in the safest blue districts in America, you can beat an incumbent by going further Left.
Michigan is the actual test – and El-Sayed started his general election campaign with a majority of the state already viewing him unfavorably.
A win hands AOC exactly what she needs to run for president in 2028 as an open socialist. A loss means what it always means when her candidates underperform – Republicans ran "very effective rhetorical attacks," never mind what the voters actually said.
She's been running that script since 2020. Michigan voters get their say on November 3.
