CNN has been running victory laps for Democrats all summer long.
The network sat Frank Luntz down to walk through the midterm numbers.
Frank Luntz went on CNN with a midterm picture that does not match anything the network has been telling its audience.
Luntz Drops the Reagan Comparison on CNN's Own Stage
Longtime Republican pollster Frank Luntz is not a Trump ally.
He spent years criticizing Trump's rhetoric and put real distance between himself and the modern GOP.
The conservative base largely tuned him out for it.
Sitting across from host Audie Cornish on CNN This Morning, Luntz delivered two findings that liberal viewers were not expecting.
"Donald Trump does have more influence on more races than any other Republican, even than Ronald Reagan," Luntz told CNN viewers directly.
"I've never seen a Republican as engaged and involved as this guy, and it matters."
That verdict came from a man who spent the better part of a decade arguing Trump was wrong for the Republican Party.
Democrats tuned in expecting another round of bad news for the GOP – Luntz gave them something else.
Trump Voter Turnout Is the X Factor in the 2026 Midterms
Luntz did not pretend the challenge facing Republicans is small.
Democrats enter November with a roughly two-point turnout edge – the anti-Trump vote is currently outpacing the pro-Trump vote in enthusiasm.
On paper, that looks comfortable for a party out of power trying to flip Congress.
"There's always been a historical advantage to the party out of power in the midterms, particularly in the first midterms," he told Cornish.
In 2018, Democrats flipped 40 House seats when Trump wasn't on the ballot.
In 2022, Republicans dramatically underperformed despite every favorable indicator, for the same reason.
"When he is on the ballot, his people come out, they participate," Luntz said. "They did in the on-year elections, 2016 and 2024, and they did not in 2018, and they did not as much even when Joe Biden was the president, for the 2022 election."
Trump's voters show up when he's on the ballot and stay home when he isn't – Democrats are treating two points like a wall when history says it's a ledge.

The 2026 Midterm States Where Republican Turnout Decides the House
Trump told the crowd at the Republican National Committee's midterm convention in Dallas what he needed from them.
"I'm asking you to pretend that I'm on the ballot," he said.
Luntz named Texas, Iowa, Alaska, and Ohio as the states where Republican turnout will determine the outcome.
He identified three voter groups Republicans must hold: Hispanic voters, male union voters, and voters under 30.
Republicans need all three – lose any one and the House math tips toward Democrats.
"If he turns out his people who still like him, still believe in the Trump message and the Trump agenda, we can have an upset," Luntz said.
Democrats Built Their Wave on Two Points and a Prayer
Democrats have been telling their base since January that this midterm is already decided.
Frank Luntz just knocked a hole in it.
He is the last person the Left expected to walk onto CNN – their network, on their air – and deliver a verdict that no Democrat operative wants on the record.
Reagan won 49 states in 1984 and defined conservative politics for a generation – and Luntz just told CNN that Trump controls something Reagan never managed: whether his own voters show up at all.
When the pollster Democrats have spent years quoting against Trump tells CNN that no Republican has ever matched his hold on his own voters, the left's midterm math gets a lot harder to sell.
Democrats are banking on Trump's voters sitting this one out, just like 2018 – Trump is asking them to prove that calculation wrong.
Luntz had a message for the Republicans who bash pollsters every time a number looks bad.
The votes are the votes.
