What she plans to do with that money would make Republicans call her un-American.
Omar Introduces Make ICE Pay Act to Strip $140 Billion From ICE and Border Patrol
Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., introduced the Make ICE Pay Act, legislation that would redirect nearly $140 billion allocated to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection under Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Under Omar's proposal, that money would flow to local jurisdictions, nonprofits, and what Omar calls "psychological services" for communities affected by immigration enforcement.
Your tax dollars – the ones Congress voted to use catching and deporting illegal aliens – would instead pay for therapy sessions and memorial funds in sanctuary cities that refused to cooperate with ICE in the first place.
Omar framed the bill as a response to Operation Metro Surge – the Trump administration's enforcement action in Minnesota that DHS called "the largest immigration enforcement operation ever carried out."
"ICE has been tearing through our nation, devastating our neighborhoods, our cities, and our businesses," Omar wrote on X.
"My Make ICE Pay Act will redirect ICE's $140 billion budget to the communities they've hurt the most."
HUD would administer the program under inspector general oversight, with the funding set to expire after three years.
Jim Banks Calls Omar Bill Un-American as Sarah Huckabee Sanders Piles On
Sen. Jim Banks, R-Ind., did not hold back.
"This bill is un-American," Banks posted on X.
"This bill defunds law enforcement and gives their funding to the communities harboring criminal illegal aliens."
"Democrats fight for everyone except the American people."
Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders questioned the premise directly.
"Defund ICE. Weaken the border. Then expect safer communities? That math isn't mathing."
John Nagel, the Republican challenging Omar for Minnesota's 5th Congressional District this November, offered an assessment that cuts to the core of what conservatives have said about Omar for years.
"Her entire existence is on crippling the United States," Nagel said.
"She is anti-police and pro communism."
Conservative social media account Libs of TikTok called it "The definition of America last."
The bill has no realistic path to becoming law while Republicans control Congress and the White House.
Homan Confirms ICE Criminal Investigation Into Omar as She Moves to Defund the Agency
She introduced this legislation while federal agents are actively investigating her.
White House border czar Tom Homan confirmed last week that the Department of Homeland Security is examining allegations involving Omar – describing the matter specifically as "an ongoing criminal investigation."
Fox News pressed Homan on whether DHS has evidence that Omar committed immigration or naturalization fraud; he declined to comment on the active case.
When asked directly whether he was confirming an investigation involving the congresswoman, Homan replied: "I'm confirming that ICE is, yeah – look, I said months ago that there's something that's been reported and needs to be looked at."
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated last week that Omar "married her brother to try to bring him into the United States."
Omar has faced these allegations for years and denied all of them.
In December she dismissed the claims as "bigoted lies" and accused Trump of being obsessed with her.
Homan did not rule out denaturalization proceedings.
"If someone committed an immigration violation, if someone committed marriage fraud or anything like that – regardless if they're a congressman or not – no one's above the law," Homan said.
Defund ICE Is Back and Omar Is Using the One Big Beautiful Bill to Do It
Democrats have had one response to record illegal alien arrests since Operation Metro Surge began: eliminate the funding that makes those arrests possible.
They tried zeroing out the ICE budget during the squad's early years in Congress and got nowhere.
Now Omar is running the same play through a different mechanism – not cutting the budget line outright, but redirecting $140 billion in enforcement funding toward the illegal alien communities that enforcement targets.
The practical effect is identical: agents without operational funding cannot operate.
Republicans funded ICE at historic levels for exactly this reason – to make the border work the way it is supposed to work.
The One Big Beautiful Bill gave ICE the resources to do the job the American people demanded when they reelected Donald Trump.
A congresswoman under active federal investigation for immigration fraud wants to defund the agents investigating her and redirect their budget to sanctuary cities that spent two years obstructing enforcement.
That is what Democrats call accountability.
