Task Force–Southern Border – the 8,000-soldier unit Trump deployed in 2025 specifically to help secure the southern border – shot down approximately 100 cartel drones in August alone, using directed-energy weapons and specialized counter-drone systems assembled from multiple military units.
Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson confirmed the operations to Fox News: "The United States is employing defensive counter-drone technology to protect our personnel and border security operations from cartel-linked drone threats."
Every strike was coordinated in advance with Mexican military and border authorities to prevent cross-border conflicts.
Biden's team spent four years claiming the problem was coordination, jurisdiction, and FAA rules.
In 2023, unidentified drones – some up to 20 feet wide – buzzed Langley Air Force Base in Virginia for 17 straight nights, flying directly over the headquarters of Air Combat Command and within range of the world's largest naval station in Norfolk.
The White House was briefed.
Nothing happened.
Suggestions to jam the signals or deploy directed-energy weapons were rejected – too risky, the lawyers said, and outside existing authorities.
While Biden's team was writing memos about the memos, cartels were logging 60,000 drone flights along the southern border in the final six months of 2024.
Army Multipurpose High Energy Laser Downs Cartel Drones Over the Rio Grande Valley
Trump's military didn't wait for permission.
On the nights of August 25 and 26, Joint Task Force–Southern Border used the Army Multipurpose High Energy Laser – the AMP-HEL system developed by AeroVironment – to destroy three cartel drones over the Rio Grande Valley that officials said posed a direct physical threat to U.S. troops and Border Patrol agents.
Fox News exclusively confirmed those three strikes were part of a far larger campaign – approximately 100 drone takedowns across August, the first time the Pentagon has ever disclosed the operational tempo of its counter-drone program at the border.
According to a senior War Department official, the U.S. is now fielding a layered system – not a single "silver bullet" – combining laser technology, trained counter-UAS personnel, and updated military authorities that allow commanders to act.
JTF-SB commander Maj. Gen. Curtis Taylor described the threat directly: "Cartel networks are increasingly employing unmanned aircraft systems to facilitate illicit human-smuggling and actively spy on our personnel and law enforcement partners."
The cost argument alone should end the debate about whether this is worth the investment.
Firing the AMP-HEL laser costs a fraction of launching a missile – and the cartels are using off-the-shelf drones they buy cheap and deploy by the thousands.
Joint Task Force Southern Border Has Shot Down 300 Cartel Drones in 2026
Cartel drone sophistication has grown dramatically since CBP detected just 150 cross-border aircraft between 2012 and 2014.
By fiscal year 2025, CBP was detecting 34,682 drone flights within 500 meters of the southern border – compared to 7,678 along the Canadian border.
In the second half of 2024 alone, CBP seized more than 1,200 pounds of methamphetamine and other narcotics transported by drone.
In October 2023, a single cartel drone was caught carrying 3.6 pounds of fentanyl pills – enough to kill tens of thousands of Americans.
These drones aren't just delivery vehicles.
They run three primary missions: tracking Border Patrol positions so smuggling corridors stay open, deploying in swarms to deny U.S. aircraft access to airspace over smuggling routes, and moving drugs across the border at night.
Some cartel operatives have reportedly traveled to Ukraine to train with front-line drone units and learn fiber-optic FPV tactics immune to electronic jamming.
The cartels treated Biden's paralysis as a green light.
Trump's War Department just sent a different message – 100 times over, in a single month.
A senior administration official said it on a press call this week: "The effects have been spectacular, and we've seen the largest and steepest reduction in U.S. casualties inflicted by the cartels in American history."
That's not analysis.
That's the scoreboard.
