The Senate spent months letting Democrats run out the clock on Trump's top election priority.
Now the clock is almost gone – and one Republican senator went on national television to say more problems are on the way.
And what he said Schumer is about to do will leave Thune with no good options.
Schumer Vows to Block Voter ID Bill and Trigger a Government Shutdown
Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana appeared on CBS's Face the Nation and didn’t spare GOP leadership.
"He's just being too cautious," Kennedy said of Senate Majority Leader John Thune – then explained why Thune's strategy is doomed.
The strategy in question: negotiate with Chuck Schumer on a bipartisan stopgap spending bill before the September 30 government funding deadline.
Schumer cannot deliver his caucus. The radical left wing – what Kennedy called "the Graham Platner wing" of the Democrat Party – has already decided Schumer's time is up.
Kennedy said they want to hand Schumer a bathrobe and an early bedtime and send him into retirement. They are not going to let him cut a deal with Republicans on anything, let alone a funding bill that could carry the SAVE America Act.
"I think he's going to shut down government," Kennedy said flatly.
Democrats chose shutdown over election integrity. Schumer is the one who will pull the trigger.
Kennedy Pushes Thune to Force SAVE America Act Through Budget Reconciliation
Kennedy gave Thune a specific list.
Put the House budget resolution on the floor. Vote on adding Iran to the Graham Russian sanctions bill. Vote on the cryptocurrency market structure bill. And take another run at the SAVE America Act through budget reconciliation – the one procedural path that bypasses the Democrat filibuster entirely.
The SAVE America Act would require Americans to show proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo identification before casting a ballot in federal elections.
Donald Trump has called it his top legislative priority. The House passed it. The Senate has voted on it five times and fallen short each time, blocked by Democrats who need at least seven of their members to join Republicans in breaking the filibuster.
Not one Democrat has moved.
Reconciliation sidesteps that wall. It requires only 51 votes – a simple Republican majority. The catch is that the Senate parliamentarian must certify the provisions qualify as budget-related. Thune has been cautious about that path too, warning last week that the budget resolution itself does not yet have the 50 Republican votes needed to advance.
"We need to put the House budget resolution on the floor," Kennedy told host Margaret Brennan. "It's the only chance we have to get money to defense, the farmers, and to take another crack at the SAVE Act."
Proof of Citizenship Bill Stalls With 11 Days Before Senate Recess
The Senate breaks for five weeks starting August 8 and does not return until September 14. That leaves roughly two weeks between the return from recess and the September 30 funding deadline.
Two weeks to fund the government, move reconciliation, and pass the SAVE America Act.
Karoline Leavitt said before Kennedy's appearance that Trump's "patience is running out." At a rally in Georgia the day before that, Trump told supporters to call Thune directly. "Call John Thune, he's the leader of the Republican Party, and tell him to get this stuff approved."
Thune fired back – at Leavitt, not Trump – telling reporters that instead of blaming Republicans, the White House ought to get on the phone and round up the votes.
Kennedy defended Thune's intentions while challenging his strategy.
"John Thune supports the SAVE Act, but we have some members who do not," he said. "And that's why God made votes, and we voted four or five times, and it's come up short. I'm ready to vote again."
Thune is protecting members from tough votes. Kennedy wants to force the votes regardless.
Schumer has been categorical: his caucus will oppose any funding bill that carries the SAVE America Act.
"It ain't passing. It ain't passing in the Senate, it ain't passing with Democrats, and it ain't passing in the courts," Schumer said.
The August recess starts August 8. If Thune goes home without forcing a vote, every Democrat who blocked election integrity gets to spend five weeks calling it dead – and they will not be wrong.
