Bill Maher Just Torched Fellow Democrats Over America 250 July 4 Celebrations

Bill Maher spent years defending Democrats from the charge that they don't love America.

Now America's 250th birthday is  less than two weeks away – and Maher just called out his own party for the ugliest spectacle in modern politics.

What he said on live television night is going to make a lot of liberals very uncomfortable.

Democrats Plan to Boycott America 250 July 4 Celebrations

Only 27% of Democrats plan to display an American flag on July 4 this year.

Republicans? 64%.

That Reuters/Ipsos poll – conducted June 12–15 among 1,537 adults – isn't a fluke. It's the latest data point in a decade-long collapse that Gallup has been tracking with increasing alarm.

In 2021, 65% of Democrats said they'd fly the flag on Independence Day. Now it's less than half that. Gallup's numbers show Democratic pride in America has dropped 26 points in a single year – from 62% to 36% between 2024 and 2025.

National Review ran the headline three days ago: "The Democrats' Patriotism Gap." Only 29% of Democrats say they're extremely or very proud to be American, versus 90% of Republicans.

That's not a gap. That's a canyon.

Bill Maher has had enough of pretending otherwise. The HBO host used his Real Time closing monologue to light into his own party with the kind of honesty you won't find on CNN or MSNBC.

"You can't take back the flag in an hour if the rest of the time you treat patriotism as something vaguely embarrassing," Maher said.

He wasn't being gentle. He was calling out a pattern that conservatives have recognized for years – Democrats deploy the flag the way a real estate agent deploys fresh cookies: as a prop to close a deal, then gone once the sale is made.

Maher pointed directly at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, where Kamala Harris's team draped the stage in red, white, and blue as if they'd always meant it.

They hadn't.

Bill Maher Blasts Democrats Over July 4 Patriotism Poll

Maher didn't stop there. He conceded the conservative argument.

"The left half of the country fears he'll make the anniversary about him," Maher said about Trump. "Of course he will."

"Every election year, Democrats seem to remember patriotism for about an hour at their convention when they're trying to win back swing voters," Maher said.

The flag shows up when votes are on the line. Maher called Trump "a temporary caretaker of America – America's employee" and urged Democrats to go to the July 4th party, wave the flag, and stop handing Republicans the one argument that keeps working against them.

They won't listen. They haven't for years.

The evidence predates Trump entirely. Even when Joe Biden was president – even when Democrats controlled Washington – only 31% of Democrats described themselves as extremely proud to be American.

Gallup has tracked this since 2001. Democratic pride has been lower than Republican pride every single year of that 25-year stretch, through Bush, Obama, Trump, Biden. This isn't about who's in the White House. This is a values problem.

What Happens When You Hate the Country You're Trying to Lead

The Freedom 250 concert collapse tells the same story in real time.

Poison, Morris Day, Young MC, the Commodores, Martina McBride – artist after artist bailed from the national Fourth of July celebration after learning it was connected to Trump.

Martina McBride posted on Instagram that she believed she'd signed on for a "nonpartisan event." Once Trump's involvement became clear, she left.

Maher wasn't sympathetic. He called it a political disaster for Democrats.

"Now it's just a big MAGA rally," he said. "Now it's just Trump and Lee Greenwood."

He's right. Every performer who walked off the stage handed Trump a cleaner narrative. Instead of a broad American celebration that included country, pop, and R&B – a concert that would have looked like the actual country – Democrats and their allies turned it into exactly what they claimed to fear: a Trump event.

The president promptly announced a massive rally promising "the Greatest Music ever played," with Lee Greenwood opening and a fireworks show on the National Mall.

The left built the stage they didn't want Trump on.

Meanwhile, Trump is planning the biggest Independence Day celebration in American history – record fireworks, a 16-day Great American State Fair on the National Mall, and a rally he's promising will be unlike anything the country has seen.

One party is throwing a party for America. The other is organizing protests with groups like the Women's March, calling it "Free America Weekend" while threatening boycotts of parades and fireworks shows.

The 86% of Americans over 65 who call themselves patriotic – the generation that built this country, buried friends in Korea and Vietnam, stood in line on Election Day for sixty years – those Americans are watching Democrats protest their own country's 250th birthday.

Maher called that "partisan sulking." That's the polite version.

The polls call it something else: a collapse in Democratic national pride so steep, so sustained, so immune to who's in the White House, that it looks less like politics and more like a belief system.

America turns 250 in less than two weeks. Republicans will be on the lawn. Democrats will be at the protest.

Bill Maher noticed.
