Pete Hegseth Gave the Boy Scouts One Ultimatum About DEI and Going Woke

Pete Hegseth threatened to cut the Pentagon's century-old partnership with the Boy Scouts unless they purged every trace of woke ideology from the program.

They said no – and Hegseth found a way to make them pay anyway.

Now every Scout troop in America has six months to prove the Boy Scouts still exist inside Scouting America – or the deal dies.

The Citizenship in Society Merit Badge That Blocked Boys From Eagle Scout

The "Citizenship in Society" merit badge was required for Eagle Scout rank.

Required.

To earn Scouting's highest honor – the rank that produced Neil Armstrong, Gerald Ford, and Sam Walton – a boy had to first demonstrate that he understood "the benefits of diversity, equity, and inclusion."

Not first aid. Not land navigation. Not the constitutional structure of his own government.

Microaggressions. Systemic bias. The kind of corporate HR content that belongs in a Fortune 500 DEI training – not on the chest of a kid who just hiked ten miles in the rain.

Pete Hegseth's signed deal with Scouting America killed that badge on the spot.

Thirteen merit badges now stand between a Scout and Eagle. The fourteenth – the DEI one – is gone. The one that got cut was dreamed up in the aftermath of George Floyd's death, mandated from the national office down to every troop in America.

Hegseth was direct: "No more DEI. Zero."

How Scouting America Lost Six Million Boys After Going Woke

The numbers are not complicated.

Scouting America peaked at roughly 6.5 million members in 1972.

Today, fewer than one million combined boys and girls remain enrolled.

Six and a half million down to under one million – and the national office responded to every milestone of that collapse by lurching further left.

Gay youth membership opened in 2013. Gay adult leaders followed in 2015. Transgender membership arrived in 2017. Girls entered Cub Scouts in 2018 and the flagship program in 2019.

The 2020 bankruptcy filing – driven by a sexual abuse settlement covering more than 82,000 claimants – did not slow the ideological march. The organization rebranded to "Scouting America" in 2025, apparently because the word "boy" had become inconvenient.

A former Scout leader put it plainly: the organization vaporized itself.

Every change arrived with a press release promising improved recruitment.

But these changes made things worse.

The Pentagon Deal That Gave Boy Scouts Six Months to Drop DEI

The memorandum is not ceremonial.

Scouting America agreed to enforce biological sex distinctions in membership and facilities – no mixing of biological boys and girls in tents, showers, or toilets.

Membership applications now list only "male" and "female," matched to birth certificates. DEI committees dissolved. Politicized language reviewed and replaced throughout all programs and publications.

In exchange for compliance, the Pentagon continues allowing Scout troops on military bases, provides logistical support for the July National Scout Jamboree, and maintains the program that lets Eagle Scouts enlist at advanced rank and pay.

That last one matters more than most people realize.

Hegseth laid out the stakes: "Six Boy Scouts have been elected president of the United States. Eleven of the 12 men to walk on the Moon were Boy Scouts."

The military is not doing Scouting a favor by maintaining this partnership. The military needs what Scouting used to produce.

Why the Boy Scouts Are a Military Recruitment Pipeline the Pentagon Cannot Afford to Lose

Roughly 77% of young Americans are currently ineligible for military service. Obesity is the single leading disqualifier. The Army fell 25% short of its 2022 recruitment targets, and that trend has not reversed.

The Boy Scouts once produced physically prepared, morally grounded young men who already understood chain of command, physical endurance, and duty to something larger than themselves.

Eagle Scouts show up in ROTC programs, service academies, and military officer tracks at rates far exceeding the general population.

Then the national office decided that what 12-year-old American boys really needed was a deep and introspective analysis of how people from other backgrounds think and live.

Scouting America built the kind of young man the military wants to recruit – and the Left spent a decade burning it down. The six-month review is the leverage. Walk away from the deal and the Pentagon pulls base access, Jamboree support, and the enlistment incentives that have made Eagle Scout a reliable on-ramp to military service for over a century.

Hegseth made the math simple: produce boys who are ready to serve, or lose the partnership that has defined American youth development since 1937.

Scouting America's leadership knows exactly what that ultimatum means. The only question is whether they deliver in good faith – or drag their feet and hope the next administration bails them out.
