Barack Obama’s biggest donors bail amid reports of marital turmoil
Former President Barack Obama broke ground on his Presidential Library in 2021 in Chicago, Illinois.
The library will house papers, and artifacts, and serve as a museum of Obama’s eight years in office.
He turned to his Rolodex of friends and campaign donors to help fund the project.
But the library is now behind schedule and over budget.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky each gave $100 million to the Obama library in 2022.
That year the library raised more than $300 million but the donations plummeted by more than 50% in 2023 according to IRS records.
The opening of the Obama Presidential Center has been pushed back to 2026 while the cost has ballooned from $500 million to more than $800 million.
One donor who contributed less told Radar Online that Obama was “arrogant.”
Donors have become alarmed about the more than $27 million in wages associated with the library including $740,000 for former Obama official Valerie Jarrett.
A lawsuit against the lead design firm alleging racial discrimination has only added to the headaches surrounding the troubled library.
Robert McGee, one of the owners of II in One Concrete, sued New York-based Thornton Tomasetti, the lead structural and engineering company for the library, alleging his company was given excessive paperwork as a minority-owned business.
“In a shocking and disheartening turn of events, the African American owner of a local construction company finds himself and his company on the brink of forced closure because of racial discrimination by the structural engineer of record (Thornton Tomasetti) for the construction of The Obama Presidential Center,” the lawsuit states.
Obama’s marriage woes cloud the picture
Obama and his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, are also dealing with rumors their marriage is coming to an end.
Radar Online reported the couple is living separately and quietly preparing for a divorce.
“Barack is ready to move on, and Michelle is too,” a source told Radar Online. “She sacrificed so much for him over the years, and she’s finally putting herself first.”
Michelle was the only former First Lady who skipped President Jimmy Carter’s Washington, D.C. funeral and President Donald Trump’s inauguration.
She and Obama haven’t been seen together in public since the middle of December.
“They’re already separated and living apart,” the source added. “Divorce will come later and quietly. For them to admit the failure is quite humiliating.”
The Obamas were treated as a glamorous couple by the media but their relationship was rocky behind the scenes.
Michelle admitted that she didn’t like politics and it put a strain on their marriage.
“People think I’m being catty by saying this – it’s like, there were 10 years where I couldn’t stand my husband. And guess when it happened? When those kids were little,” Michelle said. “For 10 years while we’re trying to build our careers and, you know, worrying about school and who’s doing what and what, I was like, ‘Ugh, this isn’t even.'”
