Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau thought he could play tough guy with Donald Trump.
But he suffered the low point of his political career.
And Justin Trudeau made one painful confession about Donald Trump that shocked everyone.
Justin Trudeau admits that Donald Trump is right about the border
President-elect Donald Trump let Canada and Mexico know he was ready to play hardball when he announced a 25% tariff on imports from both countries after he was sworn in unless they took action to curb the flow of illegal aliens and drugs coming across the border.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau flew to Mar-a-Lago to meet with Trump after he made that threat.
Despite tough talk from some Canadian politicians, the country went to work coming up with a plan to beef up security on the northern border.
The deeply unpopular Trudeau resigned as Prime Minister pending his ruling Liberal Party finalizing a replacement.
He admitted that Canada could do more to secure its border with the United States during an appearance on CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper.
“The conversation on tariffs started around border concerns, and what I spoke with him about it in Mar-a-Lago was the fact that less than 1% of migrants into the United States, less than 1% of fentanyl into the United States, comes from Canada,” Trudeau said. “But there are absolutely more things we can do. That’s a clear win for President Trump, to do even more to reduce even further the minimal amounts coming in.”
Trudeau offers Canadian resources to help the United States
Trudeau stressed that Canada could be a good ally to the United States and was a source of natural resources that could help both countries.
“On trade, there‘s more that we can do, but we should be focused on making sure that we‘re replacing Chinese lithium or Chinese germanium or Russian titanium into American productions by relying on your closest and friendliest trading partner in Canada,” Trudeau explained. “We can be a strong supplier of things that the U.S. needs to compete around the world because we can do it together. That‘s the argument that I‘m making.”
A surge in illegal immigration at the northern border has occurred under President Joe Biden.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection data found that there was a 140% increase in the number of individuals apprehended by the Border Patrol at the Canadian border in Fiscal Year 2024 compared to the previous year.
Trump’s threat to Canada to increase border security or face tariffs worked.
Canada began working on new border security measures under Trudeau.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) – which oversees the country’s border security – announced that it would be hiring more staff, acquiring more vehicles, and using technology like drones to keep an eye on potential illegal border crossings.
Ontario – Canada’s largest province – got an early start by deploying 200 Ontario Provincial Police Officers on a border security mission.
The province shares a border with Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.
Donald Trump’s tough talk with the Canadians ended up paying dividends.
