Leftists in Congress are making a hard press to change any rule they can to favor them.
The slim majority Democrats have over Republicans means a rogue Democrat could mess up any number of pieces of legislation the Left is trying to push through.
And now, Mitch McConnell just lit up the Democrats over this critical Senate rule.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has threatened to turn the Senate into a “100-car pileup” and block “even the most basic aspects” of business if Democrats eliminate the legislative filibuster.
“So let me say this very clearly for all 99 of my colleagues. Nobody serving in this chamber can even begin to imagine what a completely scorched-earth Senate would look like. None of us have served one minute in a Senate that was completely drained of comity and consent. This is an institution that requires unanimous consent to turn the lights on before noon, to proceed with a garden-variety floor speech,” McConnell threatened his fellow Senators.
McConnell went on to tell his colleagues to “imagine a world where every single task” would require a physical quorum, “which by the way, the vice president does not count in determining.”
In January, McConnell made similar threats but eventually caved after multiple Democrat Senators agreed to preserve the 60-vote threshold for bills.
But now, the left-wing extremists are pushing Democrats again to get rid of the filibuster.
To drum up public support for this effort, Democrats are claiming the filibuster is a relic of the Jim Crow era.
Democrat Senator Joe Manchin, whose support of the filibuster was key to reassuring McConnell that it would remain in place, said in a recent Fox News interview that while he still supports the filibuster, he wants to make it “more painful” to use.
The pressure to get rid of the filibuster isn’t just coming from left-wing activists but also from some top Democrats in the Senate.
Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin attacked the filibuster in a speech on the Senate floor earlier this week.
But in a 2018 interview with ABC – when Durbin was in the minority – Durbin stated that the filibuster was essential to the Senate.
Only time will tell if McConnell is forced to institute his scorched-earth Senate plan, but if it’s up to the Democrats, they’ll take away anything that gives Republicans the ability to shut down left-wing legislation.
