The controversy surrounding the 2020 Presidential election just won’t end.
Some on the Right continue to believe Donald Trump was robbed while most on the Left declare Biden won fair and square.
And now, seemingly out of nowhere, former Attorney General Bill Barr has started a new political firestorm, and Democrats are furious.
In interviews for a new book written by ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl, Barr claims that the fraud in last year’s election was “B.S.” and that Senator Minority Leader Mitch McConnell pressed him to publicly dispute Trump’s assertions.
Democrats are red with rage, saying that Barr is merely seeking to rehabilitate an image badly damaged by the Trump years.
Barr was previously known to be a staunch supporter and advocate of President Trump’s, especially during the time when Robert Mueller released his now infamous report.
Some on the Left say that Barr contributed to Trump’s cry that the voting systems were defective and rigged.
Unfortunately for Barr, it isn’t just the Democrats beating up on him.
Donald Trump isn’t real happy with these recent statements either.
In a statement released last Sunday, Trump said, “Bill Barr’s weakness helped facilitate the cover-up of the Crime of the Century, the Rigged 2020 Presidential election.”
The Hill reached Bill Barr by phone, but the former Attorney General declined to answer questions about his time in the White House and his efforts to push back on Trump’s claims.
However, when asked why he felt compelled to speak out now about Trump’s election claims, Barr merely said, “I didn’t feel compelled to. People were writing about them.”
Barr did refer back to the press conference he held right before leaving the Justice Department, where he famously broke with Trump over the former President’s efforts to overturn the election.
These recent statements that Trump’s claims about the 2020 election are baseless are a real reversal from the rhetoric Barr was spewing in the fall of 2020 when he suggested that mail-in ballots could be ripe for fraud during a CNN interview.
He made very similar statements in an interview with NPR and during Congressional testimony.
While most people with half a brain can see the obvious issues mail-in ballots cause, it is curious that Barr has now decided to say the opposite.
Is it possible Barr is looking to gain some respect back?
Or is it more possible, like so many that are part of the Washington, D.C. machine, that Barr has bigger aspirations and wants to wipe the slate clean?
Only Barr knows for sure, but one has to wonder if he knew he would be making even more enemies, on both sides of the political aisle, with these recent statements.
