The Democrat Party is tearing itself apart over what went wrong in 2024.
Liberals are searching for answers everywhere except the obvious place.
And Bill Maher made one bold prediction that Democrats are going to hate.
Bill Maher has spent years warning Democrats about their drift into radical territory.
Nobody in the party leadership wanted to listen to the liberal comedian.
Now Maher just declared that Democratic Socialists are doing more to elect Republicans than the GOP ever could.
Maher declares Democratic Socialists the Republican Party's best recruiters
Bill Maher opened his HBO show Real Time with a joke that cut straight to the bone.
"Democrats must recognize that Zohran Mamdani is the future of the party," Maher announced. "Unfortunately, it's the Republican Party."¹
The audience didn't know whether to laugh or groan.
Maher was talking about the self-described Democratic Socialist who just won the mayoral race, but his point went far beyond one election.
He warned Democrats that their socialist fever is doing Republicans' work for them.
"If you missed his victory speech in last week's mayoral election, don't worry," Maher continued. "You'll see it in every attack ad for the next two years."²
Virginia Governor-elect tried to warn them
Maher pointed to Virginia Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger, who tried sounding the alarm before the 2024 election.
Spanberger warned Democrats bluntly: "If the party didn't shift to the center, we will get torn apart."³
She added that Democrats needed to "never use the word socialist or socialism ever again."⁴
"Well, she was right, but they didn't listen," Maher stated. "Typical, am I right, ladies?"⁵
The data backs up Spanberger's warning.
In 2024, 13 Democrats won in districts Trump also carried.
Every single one ran as a moderate.
"This isn't rocket science," Maher explained. "All the left-leaning think tanks have done autopsies on 2024, and they all came up with the same message. Move to the center."⁶
Maher torches Bernie Sanders's failed experiment
Maher didn't stop with slamming the new breed of socialists.
He went straight after the godfather of Democratic Socialism himself – Bernie Sanders.
Sanders has represented Vermont since 2006, building the state into his laboratory for socialist policies.
The results speak for themselves.
Democrats lost more legislative seats in Vermont in 2024 than in any other state.
Republicans now hold 56 seats in the 150-member state House, up from just 37 two years ago.
In the 30-member state Senate, GOP ranks grew from seven to 13.
Even Sanders took an electoral hit, winning reelection with just 63% of the vote compared to his previous margins of up to 71%.⁷
"Democratic socialism is like a dating profile," Maher joked. "Things look great until you meet up in the real world."⁸
He warned that socialism simply doesn't work and has never worked.
"I know the kids think that stuff that happened before their appearance on the planet didn't really happen, but it did," Maher added. "We've run this experiment many times, and the results are always obvious."⁹
Socialist wins pile up as moderates sound alarm
Maher's warning came as Democratic Socialists racked up wins across the country.
Katie Wilson, a 43-year-old self-described socialist, just defeated Seattle's incumbent mayor by less than 2,000 votes.
Wilson never held elected office before.
She dropped out of Oxford University six weeks before graduation.
Her parents reportedly provide financial support to her and her unemployed husband.
Now she's running one of America's largest cities on a platform of raising taxes, protecting sanctuary city status, and "Trump-proofing" Seattle.
"Radical economic policy is always ineluctably married to radical social policy," Maher warned Democrats.¹⁰
The Democratic Socialists of America convention featured delegates singing "Solidarity Forever" like it was 1917 Russia all over again.
Maher noted that Americans are "begging both parties" to "act normal."
"It's either defund the police or military in the streets. Either MAGA's crypto-crony capitalism or city-run grocery stores," Maher said. "I want a Democrat who reassures me, if you like your Whole Foods, you can keep your Whole Foods."¹¹
Democrats face a choice between moderates who win elections and socialists who energize the base but terrify everyone else.
Bill Maher sees what's coming.
If Democrats keep letting socialists speak for the party, they'll keep handing Republicans victories.
Even liberal comedians can't ignore the math anymore.
