The United States is in the midst of its biggest crime wave in a generation due to Democrats’ soft-on-crime policies.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and her radical left-wing “Squad” were the head cheerleaders for the “defund the police” movement, which led Democrat-controlled cities nationwide to slash their law enforcement budgets.
Soft-on-crime left-wing prosecutors backed by extremist billionaire George Soros have stopped charging criminals for shoplifting in major cities.
And as a result, retail theft is exploding across the country, as criminals are emboldened by Democrats’ pro-criminal policies.
Stores are being targeted by organized gangs of thieves, and are being forced to consider making some major changes.
Walmart CEO Doug McMillon admitted during an interview with CNBC that shoplifting being on the rise is a bigger issue than ever before.
“Theft is an issue,” McMillon said. “It’s higher than what it has historically been. We’ve got safety measures, security measures that we’ve put in place by store location.”
Retailers in some urban areas have begun to lock down most of their merchandise to prevent would-be shoplifters.
“I think local law enforcement being staffed and being a good partner is part of that equation, and that’s normally how we approach it,” McMillon added. “If that’s not corrected over time, prices will be higher, and/or stores will close.”
Police departments nationwide are suffering from staffing shortages after Democrats’ “defund the police” movement, and from officers leaving the profession after being attacked day and night by Democrats like Rep. Ocasio-Cortez.
Now Americans could face higher prices and a longer commute to Walmart because of the disastrous policies pursued by Democrats.
McMillon said Walmart is taking a “city by city” and “location by location” approach to dealing with the issue of shoplifting.
Shoplifting is a national crisis forcing retailers to introduce costly new security measures to try and stop criminals.
Neil Bradley, executive vice president and chief policy officer at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, is asking Congress to get tough on crime.
“Retail theft is becoming a national crisis, hurting businesses in every state and the communities they serve,” Bradley said. “We call on policymakers to tackle this problem head-on before it gets further out of control. No store should have to close because of theft.”
Retailers have closed stores in Democrat-controlled cities, like San Francisco, because of the epidemic of shoplifting and lack of a response from left-wing politicians.
Walmart becomes the latest major retailer to sound the alarm on the devastating impact of soaring shoplifting.
Last month, Target CFO Michael Fiddelke said that the company had already lost $400 million in profits from retail theft, with that number expected to rise to $600 million by end of the year.
The retailer’s CEO Brian Cornell said the company has “seen a significant increase in theft and organized retail crime across our business.”
